I loved by 06 BB S, but really missed having torque. Got a lot of that now in my STi!

Makes me appreciate the S2000 but to me it is very dated and I don't even consider wanting to buy one used as spending another 4-5 grand can get you into a vette/m3/evo/sti etc.

does anybody feel the same like me and hope for more drop top fun in our future?
Wow! Dated - Hell No. It looks a HELLUVA lot better than some of the crap looking cars being built now . Styling has fallen off a cliff from most manufacturers. The ones that do look better then the S all have 6 figure price tags!
As far as spending another 5 grand to get other cars on your list . Evo-STI - While I really like the idea of these two I am not much on the 4 door performance thing . I want a 2 door Sporty looking car not a 4 door sedan. M3 - For me BMW styling looks too sedate sedan looking . And finally the Vette - Too common, In my part of the country these are driven by retired dudes , not sold on the build quality and don't like the styling on these since the 67 Stingray.

S4000? Oh because it weights that much.

Seriously though Aston makes amazingly beautiful cars, but I wouldn't trust their reliability yet. Maybe check out some Aston forums. I know 6speedonline has a sub section for Aston.
The roadster is like a scaled up S2000, especially with the sport pack fitted. The handling is very similar, very fluid with great handling.
Like I say I had 4 S2000's including a 420 BHP supercharged one and the comparision is fair. Though I'd have said S4700
On the reliabilty thing, that is true of pre Gaydon cars.
The DB9, DBS and Vantage are manufactured completely differently, much like the Porsche and Ferrari line with robotic assembly & painting. The quality control is superb as they are fighting to regain confidence in the reliability.
Many are daily drives in the UK and used over the winter with no issue.
I do a lot of mountain touring in Europe and would not be with out a roadster, you feel so much more a part of the landscape.
I looked at 911 turbo and Gallardo cabs but the Aston just gives a fantastic sense of occasion every time you get in.
Plus the reaction of people around you is refreshingly positive every time!
I'm just waiting on them making a V12 roadster now

The Porsche Boxster (04+) is the next step from the S2000 imo. Good news for all since its still made and regularly updated, and is basically available at all price points from an S2000.

Yep I'd agree with that

Not me. I never wanted a convertible to begin with, but since the S2000 had everything else I wanted from a car, I compromised and accepted the soft-top. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to drop the top on a sunny day, but I would've much rather preferred to have a coupe version of the S2000.

So, rather than hoping for more drop-top fun in the future, I'm hoping that someone comes out with a fun, nimble, RWD sport coupe in a reasonable price range. The Cayman S would be great... if it cost about $40K well-optioned off the showroom floor. But at $70-80K, it's just not in my price range. And unfortunately, there's nothing else out there that really interests me.

I used to hate convertibles just because I don't like the attention it gets and the soft top is not very appealing. But, after owning a S2000 for 2+ years, I miss it now whenever I see perfect weather for top down, and driving up the mountains.

I am looking to get back into a roadster but need something cheaper than a s2000, under 5k. Have any of you had experience with cars like Alfa Spider 916, MGB, 914, 450sl? Not really looking for performance since I have the NSX for it.

I'd love to step up to a boxster or cayman but I don't think I can afford the maintenance. Therefore my next car will be a vette.

I miss the drop top. A sunroof does NOT cut it.

I'd take another S2000 tomorrow if I could. A supercharger would make it near perfect for me.

I just recently had the very same conversation with someone, i.e., a "real" convertible vs. a sunroof or (in his consideration) a targa roof. I mean a targa pretty much opens the entire roof, but there's still something constraining about it.

On your second point, I'm thinking the same thing.
