1. It's marketing BS. Nothing's free. It's padded onto the price of new BMW's (they've raised their prices across the board since they've implemented that free maintenance).
2. Audi has a $600 prepaid maintenance option that lasts the entire warranty as well. It may not be "free", but at least they give you the option instead of sticking it to you. It doesn't include brake pads like BMW's though.

I'd also guess that the portion of the purchase price allocated to the maint. program is much less than what it would cost to service it yourself.
All I can say is that I'm always a lot happier leaving my BMW service dept. than I was leaving the Porsche service dept.

Yep. Audi is no longer the bargain it used to be.
Re: "free maintenance" -- I agree. The more maintenance packages they sell (~100% since it's included), the cheaper it will probably be to do that service (requiring everyone to pay it vs. having it as an option). It's a genius move on BMW's part because:
1. Most people these days don't give a flip about maintaining their car, so it's a good way to make sure it gets done. Better maintained cars = better reliability = better reputation.
2. In turn, it's also a good way for them to make money down the line when attempting to tag them as CPO, since they'll know (hopefully) for sure maintenance was done.
