I drove the snot out of an SL500 today. At the convention center in Las Vegas, Mercedes had an event where they laid out a fairly decent autox course and let people drive any one of a fleet of cars on it. I was warned by a staff member (who was laughing as she did it) to slow down after having the C230 Sport Coupe in a 4-wheel drift around a sweeper. They also had an S600 (493 HP!) and other sedans.
The SL500 was unbelievable. Virtually no body roll, very comfortable, decent steering ratio, plenty of power. It's heavy, though, and nothing (even the ABC system on the car) will totally compensate for it. If I wanted a fast convertible for tooling around and occasionally going fast, that would be the car for me.
One more thing that really surprised me - the brake-by-wire system was not nearly as noticeable or obtrusive as I thought it would be.

Excellent. Thanks for the driving impression, Dave. I'm really glad MB has put an excellent chassis underneath that beautiful sheet metal.
Looks like a winner to me (for those well-heeled enough to afford it, that is! ).
