I don't understand the hype of mid engined cars. To me a good chassis and suspension setup equals good handling whether it's FR or MR. Honestly the handling characteristics between my S2000 and Elise were pretty darn similar. If you didn't tell me what setup the car in a car and just let me drive it I probably wouldn't even notice.

Anyway to answer your question a 986 Boxster S is probably the best all around mid engined car t hat is cheap.

My Cayman S felt totally different than my front-mid engined cars. I preferred the handling, hated the poor access to the engine compartment. Front-mid is a good compromise in that you can still get good (just not as good) handling, while easily getting under the hood to do maintenance.

NSX (NA2) or Elise/Exige would get my vote.

"Can anyone think of any reasonably priced mid-engined cars?"

You said "reasonably priced"... and said nothing about FUN....

So here you go. And it is RWD/4WD too.

I don't think the Van actually was mid-engine. The front wheels were just too far back!
More seriously, the Van had basically a standard Toyota truck drive train. The Previa on the other hand...

If you haven't driven a well-maintained Fiero GT, you are really missing out.
According to most Fiero enthusiasts (there are a handful!) '88 (last year) is the only year worthy of consideration. Complete suspension upgrade, no longer parts-shelf from fwd.

Very light, V6,
They weren't lightweight for their size at all. 2600 lb. for the 4-cylinder, 2800 for the V6. Quite dense...

Weber fuel injection years before fuel injection was commonplace,
???? Most cars had F.I. by 1984, and you would be hard-pressed to find a stock non fuel-injected 1988 model. Fuel injection certainly wasn't "exotic" or out of the ordinary in 1984, and I'm pretty sure they used standard GM components in the Fiero. In any case, the 2.5 liter four made 105hp and the 2.8 six made, what, 140? I seriously doubt the fuel injection was sourced from Weber, but if so, it didn't amount to any benefit.

But GM should have developed the platform further.
Totally agree with you here.

an incredible car to drive.
Neat? Yes. Incredible? Not exactly...
My brother had a mint condition 88 Fiero GT. It was an ok car at best. The sound of the motor increasing RPMs is extremely fun, but unfortunately the car had no pwer. Slow turns were pain with no power steering. although i never pushed the car too hard, it seemed to handle extremely well. The suspension was super stiff and strong. Got to love the plastic body
I guess collectors really like these cars though, I am in SoCal and a guy flew from Pennsylvania and drove it home after he purchased it. Die hard Fiero fans haha

I guess you are right. But the Previa was a mid-engine. Even Top Gear did a race with it.
