Am I crazy for considering a MB SL55 over 996TT?

The only writing on the wall Porsche sees is the 996TT customers lining up to pay $xx,xxx to add leather and satnav and any number of other heavy options to their cars, and other customers lining up to pay $xxx, xxx for the GT2 and GT3.
Guys, these carmakers aren't dumb. They know what their audience will pay for, and what they want. They know their audience is mostly concerned with image. For those who want a stripped-down racing machine, Porsche is only too happy to charge $50k more than a turbo for a GT2. Porsche has already shown it is willing to handicap its low-end cars to get customers into a medium car (Cayman vs 997), why are you surprised when they handicap a medium-high end car to get them into a high end one (997TT vs GT2)?

That being said I agree with you. I loved my 996, but have serious reservations about buying another Porsche until they start offering discounts again (like they did with the 996's). To me the new Carrera S should have been the Carrera, and the upcoming Turbo S (supposedly 500-525 hp) should be the regular turbo. The current Carrera (325 hp) is a joke. That engine should have been in the Cayman S, and the 355 hp should have been the standard engine in the Carrera, with the 381 hp engine as the Carrera S option. Now you buy a Carrera S, and as if dropping $90K on the car wasn't enough, they want to charge you another $12K for a "powerkit" option. Ridiculous. I have no remorse when people were getting $6K-$10K discounts on their Porsche cars before.

howdy,
Back in 99 i got caught up in the MB craze and got an E320.I had so many electrical problems(with window and stereo.must of gone to the dealer about 10 times in five years i owned the car for these reasons) I told myself i would never get a MB again.A friend of mine got an SL500 about a year and a half ago....he also has electrical problems with his car.
You would think if you payed so much money for a car atleast they should have the kinks out and run a good 6 years problem free.
I hear BMW has same problems
Peace
David

I've never driven a Porsche, but I do have an SL55. We've had it since last summer and we've put about 10000 miles on it. The car has not had a single problem; it has never had an unscheduled visit to the dealer. The power and acceleration is truly neck snapping. Every time I get into the driver's seat I'm amazed. The sound the SL makes when the top is down is like a muscle car. It's deep and resonating with just a hint of high pitched supercharger whine that only complements the sound. Even the handling is not what you'd expect from a 4400 lb car. It has a surprising amount of grip and can pull serious amount of lateral g's. The car seems to glide through turns with little drama. If you want to get the rear end loose, just turn off ESP and the car can become a welcomed handful.
Potentially, the true beauty of the car lies in the way it pampers you in addition to being properly sporty. The heated and cooled seats with massage make you feel like a king and takes away any feelings of fatigue. The panarama glass roof takes away any sense of chlostrophobia you may experience in other convertibles. I could truly drive the car for hours upon hours without tiring. And if you decide to drive cross country, you don't have to worry too much about space in the trunk with the top down because the roof takes very little room away from the luggage area. Access to your belongings with the top down is simple as well. All you have to do is press a button in the trunk and the top goes a quarter of the way up for easy access to the luggage. Press it again the top goes back down. You can even lower and raise the roof using just your key remote control; hold unlock for top down, hold lock for top up. The automobile is just so well thought out.

If we were to play the "You can only own one car, what is it?" game (instead of the "Spend $xxxxx" game in the other thread), some sort of SL would probably be my answer. SL600 vs SL55 would be a tough call though, they are roughly the same price I believe.

why not look at maserati? similar class, but more exclusivity and a great parts supplier.
when i was in atlanta, i would literally see 20-30 SLs per day, and i cant even count how many p-cars i see.
