The vetter got the worst ratings in Motor Trend October issue when it went up against 4 other 2-seat convertibles! Worst for reliability and they made fun of its "Buick-Olsmobile interior parts bin" feel
As far as the M3, drive one and if the Engine sound and performance still doesnt do it for ya, the stereo will blow you away!

Okay, I'll play GM-fan boy in the room. At $50K (really $46 at invoice price) the Z06 vette eats M3's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in terms of performance (acceleration, handling, lap times, top speed, what else do you want?). Add some headers and exhaust cut-outs and the sound will scare the paint off most other cars.
Not that I dislike M3's. I think they're really well balanced and nicely packaged. They can't really brag about superior quality, what with the engine blow-ups. And that's not hearsay. That's from two serious M-power fanatics I race with (one of whom replaed TWO motors under warranty, both not his fault).

I jsut wanted to chime in and say that the Harmon Kardon upgrade does not suck. What sucks is how it is installed at the factory. Due to the sh!tty installation, there are buzzes that you will hear. The clips that are used are no good. Then when you take in your car to get rid of the rattles, they only add foam to it and still use the crappy clips. Other than that, the HK sounds great (except it still needs more bass).
I would blast it and never hear any distortion. 12 speakers. from me

Ok, ok, ok. Let's stick with the topic please. M's and S's. That's all. We'll go on for days if we include everything on four wheels. I was just very impressed with the car and would like input from someone who knows a little more about them than I do.
Penforhire : Every vehicle has had it's share of owners who have had catastrophic failures. Until you reach recall status, I don't put much stock in a few horrific testimonials.

Before I bought my S2000 - I was looking at used E46 M3s.
Enough of them blew their motors to prompt BMW to extend the warranty on some of them to 100K miles.

6yr/100k engine warranty is good on all 2001-2003 M3s
2004's do not get this warranty.
This warranty is also good on all 2001-2002 M coupes (they have the same S54 engine)

The engine blowups ive read were only on the September 2001 M3's....and it only happened on 2% of the M3's released at that time. Very few problems since....If i were you, id stay away from real low mileage Sept 2001 M3's
