French website Unica Strada has published the first spy shot of the 2014 Alfa Romeo 4C. Tentatively scheduled to be revealed next summer, the mid-engined sports car will go on sale in the United States a year later.
Save for the door mirrors, the camouflaged test mule appears to be nearly identical to the concept that bowed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show but the story is different under the skin: When the 4C debuted in Geneva, much of the car was made out of expensive carbon fiber. In order to avoid Ferrari-like prices, the production version's exterior panels will be made from sheet-molded composites and, while the car's central tub will still utilize carbon, the front and rear frames will be made with aluminum. When all is said and done, the production-bound 4C will tip the scale at approximately 1,980 pounds.
The test mule pictured is equipped with federally-mandated side marker lamps on the front wheel arches, a good indication that it is a U.S.-spec model.
The 4C will be powered by a 296-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,750 cubic centimeters, a number that Alfisti around the world will immediately associate with the Italian automaker's illustrious past. Linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the four-banger will propel the 4C from zero to 60 mph in a brisk 4.5 seconds.
More details about the 4C and Alfa Romeo's strategy to return to the United States will be revealed during a press conference that will take place on October 30th.

Wow if they can hit all those numbers and have it come in at a decent price (even around the price of an elise would be good) these should sell like crazy. I do question if the weight will remain the same for the US market since I think our safety regulations are different than the EU. Also wouldn't that weight and HP make it lighter and faster than most lotus cars out there? I am excited to see if this thing makes it over here with a decent price tag.

I thought they were shooting for around 50K USD for the 4C. More and more cars are being engineered for worldwide standards more than just EMEA or NASA standards. Does not make sense to too two different cars and validate both of them. I have hung a light for Alfa's return since they left in '95. No other regular priced car has the looks of an Alfa; sheer automotive art for a real driver.

Wow. I have no doubts about geting your money's worth.
I'm curious what the rest of the car is like. Lotus seems to sell a profitable number of cars with something most of us would not tolerate for a daily driver. Is that what this is? I'd guess that, but does anyone have any insight?

Either way, it's 850-1000 lbs lighter than a Boxster or Cayman, with similar power, and both those cars can do low 4s 0-60, so I'd expect this car to be possibly in the high 3s range or else 4.0s flat. I'd be lined up to buy that car!

Add $10 grand to the price you think
Subtract 30 hp from what you think
Add 200 pounds from what you think
Add .5 seconds to the 0-60 time
And that's what the rumor car and actual production car will end up as Remember when the 370Z was supposed to be 3,000 lbs and 330+hp?
