I have a 08 R32 as a DD and I love it. It is a great car to drive. DSG is great once you get used to it. Sport mode downshifts for you into turns. The exhaust note is amazing, brakes are another plus and the awd helps when the weather gets bad. The interior is great (heated seats ftw). Its not the best at anything but it is very good at just about everything. It is a very practical car and that is a great price!
It did just fine keeping up with S2000's on the last group drive in my area.

I know the talk has been about the VW and I own a Passat as a DD. I have 174K on the clock and it has been reliable. The only thing about VW is the dealers are VERY expensive and parts are also. If something on mine does go wrong I do most of the work myself or I have found a VW guru near me to point me in the right direction.
Just a thought if you are looking for something German have you looked at a S4. You can find a very cleean used one in your price range. Stupid fast, all wheel drive and very nice interior. Gas millage is not great. Just my .02.
One more thing have you drove a GTI. Not an R32 but not bad either.
Good luck.

VDubs are hit and miss from my experience. I know a guy that had to lemon law his but others without much issues. They are like the Big 3, just hope yours was built on a Tues-Thursday.
The R32 you are considering....have the service records pulled on it.

My wife DD a MK5 R32. I like the car, as stated previously the exhaust note is heavenly and DSG is fun once you get used to it.
We have had a few issues. Our DSG wasn't shifting properly and VW changed out its control unit and then the whole transmission. Our HVAC seems to do strange things from time to time also (no heat or only heat).
I do enjoy the car during the MN winters though. AWD drifts and being able to maintain interstate speeds during a blizzard FTW!

I cross shopped the R32 before I settled with the Mazdaspeed3. In the end I settled with the car which was cheaper and had more space between the two. I think both cars are fairly fast.
Having said that, I think you'll really like the R32 especially for the price you were quoted for.
It sounds like in your mind you've settled with the R32. i think you'll be happy.
