Default Acura/Honda Pass BMW in Resale Value

From WSJ.com ... (Mini topped the spot convertible!)

Sister brands Honda and Acura topped the latest list of vehicle brands with the best resale value -- an important measure for upscale car buyers -- edging out longtime leader BMW.

Volkswagen, which moved up to No. 2, and BMW and its Mini brand, tied for third, also earned high marks in Kelley Blue Book's survey for the 2007 model year, as foreign brands took almost all the top honors.

Kelley Blue Book expects Honda and Acura's latest vehicles to retain nearly 56% of their original retail price in five years. VW and BMW/Mini vehicles trail by less than a percentage point. By contrast, vehicles with low resale values retain just 18% to 24% of their original prices.

A good resale value can improve the perception of a brand; the nameplates that have strong resale values, like Honda and Toyota, have been gaining market share in the U.S. For car shoppers, a strong resale value reduces the total cost of ownership for a vehicle, as an owner can get more for the vehicle when it is resold. But strong resale values also tend to push up lease rates, making some brands less affordable.

Ford Motor Co. brand Land Rover came in fourth, and Porsche AG rounded out the list of the top five brands. Toyota Motor Corp. brands replaced Porsche in the fifth spot when vehicles produced in low numbers were excluded.

The image didn't show up ... these are the top ten 2007 cars that are expected to have best resale values in 5 years:

1. Acura TSX
2. Pontiac Solstice
3. BMW 5-series
4. Scion tC
5. Honda Civic
6. Toyota Prius
7. Lexus IS
8. VW GTI
9. Mini Cooper
10. VW Eos

I think #2 is a little surprising. The others probably make sense ...

Mini Coopers are insanely expensive, used. Some are only losing a few grand over two years, if they have the right options and are in places like SoCal.

See JonBoy? TSX. Good investment. You'll squeeze your little kids in the back seat.

I'm surprised the 5 series still has a good resale value, that 4 year maintence warranty must be good

I am shocked Toyota/Lexus is that far behind Honda/Acura.

I didn't/wouldn't buy one based on resale value, but I might avoid one based on it. For example, I think Land/Range Rovers and Jaguars have awful depreciation; I'd buy a one-year-old model just to insulate myself from that. Besides, we are talking about commodity cars here, more or less; I wouldn't pick a new sports car based on depreciation, but for a DD, it would be at least a consideration. Not considering it at all is just financially foolish, especially when it's time to choose how to pay for it; I knew I could finance my TSX over 5 years because I wouldn't go upside down much, if at all, but the same couldn't be said for the same Ford product, for instance; it would be smarter to finance one of those on a shorter term so I could more easily get out of the loan in case of an emergency.
