997S Vs. R8 Vs. 997 GT3. Vs. Z06 Vs. AMV8
Well its been 3 months since I bought my last car and I am starting to get the itch again. This is purely hypothetical at the moment. So, What would you do? I have to get the OK from the wife b/c I bought 2 cars last year and she is kinda getting tired of the car $$$$$$/addiction. Well "kinda" isn't the exact word she said.
I've had the NSX for almost 4 years. So I have been thinking about getting something different. The NSX has been a great experience. The car runs perfect. Have met some great friends via the NSX. The red rocket has 58k miles on it but it looks like its 2 years old. No mechanical issues at all. Resale values obviously not an issue since the AASC came out.
I bought the Spec Miata to be my designated track car but come on how can you buy one of the listed cars and not take it to the track. Maybe 1-2 times a year of track use.
1. The main reason for the 997S is b/c I can put my 4 y/o son in the back seat. The other reason is that I can get one at auction for cheap. A 2005 Black 997S went for $62k in Dallas yesterday. But, I don't know if its a significant jump in performance over a well sorted NSX. I guess I would get to be part of the PCA experience and get to do PCA events. But thats not enough to make me buy it.
2. R8 - I am not quite sure about its looks but the specs are impressive. It mid engine, looks nice on the inside. But no true racing pedigree like the P - cars. I wished it weighed less. I want the V-10, no true manual. Audi resale is the worst.
3. 997 GT3 - my top choice if it wasn't for the back seat issue and also its hard for me to pay MSRP($115k) only to see it depreciate in 2 years by $30k. Used GT3 - is another option. I thought about it but decided to go for the 997 GT3.
4. Z06 - The best bang for the buck. Unbelievable performance but those prices haven't gone down yet. Paying MSRP for a Chevy that has significant mark up already hurts. They won't let you drive one. And the prices are going to drop sooner or later. Its probably too much car for street use/ wknd use. Looks are so/so, interior - so so. If I could get one below MSRP I would probably jump on it.
5. AM V8 - just in the same price range. Looks nice on the outside - otherwise nothing special IMHO.
So as you can see I am being quite bipolar about the whole thing. I want some that would be an "upgrade" from the NSX yet it should be a car that has good value and be fun at the track. Resale is important just so that I have the flexibility to flip it if I get bored of it.

I think you can mark the R8 off the list unless you happen to be on the reported 2 year wait list and have the cash for the ridiculous markup you know this car will carry.
You dont sound overly exicted about any of them but the P cars. I personally think buying a new P car is far from intelligent financially (no car is obvioulsy but Pcars are even more so) but if you have the cash to blow and dont care about depreciation, go for a new GT3 (definitely the best out of the bunch listed IMO)
Sounds like the 997S would be your best bet if you have to have one now. Or wait a couple years while letting depreciation work its magic and buy one of these

To mdxluvr why not go for the chebby, the resale may or may not be great but the total net loss will certainly be much much lower than any of the others as well as having the lowest initial out of pocket. Drive a regular C6Z51 that is well sorted then imagine it with slighly stiffer suspension, better brakes, less weight, wider wheels/tires and 100 more HP . If you are going to get rid of whatever you buy in a couple of years anyway, then you can go trade the Z for a new GTR when it comes out. The Z06 is the screaming performance bargain of all time, you will be shocked with the performance.
