993 Question: What are the different types?
I've always liked the 993 better than the 996 and 997..I'm even considering it as a possible car. Anyone here have any experience with them? Plus, the main question I have are: What were the changes made to them since their introduction in 1994? Are there different body types? Its hard to tell from pictures, but does the 4S or 2S have wider bodies than the regular coupes? Are those nifty looking airvents on the bottom of the front bumpers (I think from the '97+) functional? Can you use that bumper on the older years? THanks alot!

They had the same design from 95-98 but there were a lot of diffrent model designations such as narrow body and wide body and 911S and on and on. The 95 had 270 h.p. and the 96 up had 282, 96 was the first year with the varioram engine. Some people prefer the 95 over the later years as people claim it is easier to chip and people also complain that the 96 up models have a tendency to have problems with check engine lights being constantly on. The drivetrains seem to be pretty indestructible with quite a few going over 200K. Issues that I have heard of with these models are DME relays going (easy fix) problems with back windows breaking, steering racks going and excessive carbon buildup causing valve problems, but keep in mind these are worse case scenarios. A proper 993 is a very stable, well handling, accelerating and eyeball popping braking machine.
If you haven't found it already check out www.rennlist.com and go to their 993 section there is a wealth of information there.

cool. Thanks for the clear up....So I'm guessing that the turbo and 993S series are widebodies? Any regular 993 with widebodies?
