Mazda Protege
Civic reliability without Civic used car premium.
Focus
Great handling car. I think CR recommends the Focus after MY '01.
Hondas are good but I almost never recommend a used Honda. Basically they are too expensive on the used car market. Too many other good used cars to bother over paying for a Honda.

I agree on the Corolla, Protege, Sentra, Altima, and to a lesser degree Focus. The GTI was mentioned and I'll add the basic Golf also. A few months ago when I was looking for a car in this price range I found a Golf GLS TDI for $7000. It had higher miles on it but those engines shouldn't need a rebuild for over 1,000,000 miles. I've driven it 17,000 miles since mid Feb with Zero problems and an overall mpg average of 46+.

Funny no one mentioned non-GSR integras, like a nice GS or LS would be a nice car to have, relatively bullet proof with a nice spunk to it, great quality leather and overall fit and finish, and comes in her choice of coupe or sedan. An RSX in any trim for 8 grand isn't going to happen unless you got a crazy good deal or a risky one. An EP3 is a great car (owned one) if she's willing to drive stick; if she is, the car is very rewarding, great handling, engine is bullet proof, mileage is reasonable for the power, and overall great quality car. Also, if she wants somethign sportier, Preludes (last gen) are dipping into those price ranges as well, a good all around package with a good fun factor.
If i was looking in that price range... 240sx, MR2, or Eagle Talon, probably go with the Talon or the 240sx if I could find a nice kouki S14.
