+1 on the RX-8 -- go drive one. Steering and handling are remarkable similar (although more body roll), power is about the same, both engines love revs, similar look. Anything else with 4 doors will feel heavy (but could easily be faster in a lot of cases).

Fuel economy is not as good, but they are not slower - specs are almost identical. The RX-8 lists city mpg at 16, and people get closer to 13, while the S2000 is listed at 18, and people report 22. People also report getting better mpg in the RX-8 on the highway though... the rotary is best when its working hard.
The RX8 is the closest thing to an S2000 you can drive that isn't an S2000, but this is the manual transmission car - I wouldn't buy an auto RX-8.
As for Sis and Mazdaspeed 3s.... fwd is not like rwd. They are decent cars, but they don't drive the same, and you'll notice.

its a nice car, with nice dynamics, and IS the closest thing to a 4d s2k, but its slow and sucks fuel like a F-150.

THE rx8 is a good bit slower than the s2k. its about on par with a RSXs or SI IMHO as far as flat out accleration goes. the best ive seen one do is 14.5, which is about a half second slower than a stock s2k. most run 15.0's.

RX-8
I 've owned one since Sept 2003, and have never gotten worse than 16 mpg. I average a solid 18 mpg around Tampa Bay Florida, The A/C is running 10 months out of the year. The RX-8 drinks fuel when it idles (at 900 rpm the rotors are only turning 300 rpm). On the highway it gets a decent 25 mpg. I don't know what these guys are doing that get 13 mpg because I get the 18 mpg whether I drive it like a granny or like I stole it. I use 89 octane Hess - it likes the 10% ethanol - lol. I have Michelin Pilot sport tires on it, they were fairly expensive , but perhaps they have less rolling resistance than Kumhos, Falkens or other less expensive tires that I see people using. It uses 1 qt of 5w-20w Castrol GTX every 2000 miles. Mazda has me changing the oil every 5000 miles, using Dino oil. My car has 55k miles the engine is solid.
The steering and the shifter in the RX-8 are probably the closest to an S2000 than any other car, with the exception of a Miata. The insurance will be less on the RX-8 than an Evo or STI. You can get Leather and HIDs in the RX-8, I don't think the Si has them. And as we all know there is NOTHING like shifting at 9000 rpms, Nothing!
The RX-8 will not beat an S2000 in a drag race, so what, how often do you drag
race?

closest thing:
rx8, e36 sedan - due to their RWD nature
mazdaspeed3, civic si sedan - not really similiar since these are FWD but offers somewhat similiar #'s in performance
evo ix, sti - not really similiar since these are AWD but offers similiar #'s in performance

I know these are fairly obscure, but how about...
330i sedan with the M package they made like in 2004 or 2005. I believe they had one in Red or something... 6speed 220hp
Yeah here is what I'm talking about

No sedan is that light. So you won't find anything very similar to S2000 in driving feel. But somehow similar? I would say BMW 335i RWD sedan, try to find one with less features so the price would be as close as S2000 as possible. If in Japan you could try the Civic Mugen RR or Civic Type R. But I am not sure if Si is the same thing.
