It simply sounds like you don't understand. Maybe a lot of mature people think like the S2000 enough to buy it as their fun car. Many mature people have lived in the "gotta have the latest and greatest and most highest HP car out there" phase and now like the "I can get a S2000 cheap now that brings a smile to my face every time I drive it" phase. Ever wonder why the Miata sold so many damn cars? People like this don't go out rolling around in their S2000 to act like they are elite driving an "exclusive" car to try to get attention. Maybe they just like driving their S2000. Least you forget that it was the elite sports car of the day in 2000. Now you can own the elite sports car of the day 9 years ago for $8000. Sounds like an awesome deal.
I drive mine every day and acknowledge it's value, but submitting it to garage duty makes no sense IMO. The car is fun to drive for CHEAP, so DRIVE IT.
If I owned a much more expensive car that costs much much more to maintain (M3) I'd be skeptical about driving it everyday. But you're saying it's cheap and fun (not to mention dirt cheap to maintain) yet let's keep it in the garage so that's mentalities gotta be sourced from else where. Not the excuse above.

The S2000 is the best commuter car I have ever driven, it's perfectly suited for getting through congested side streets while having alot of fun doing it. You honestly don't need more power in such situations, but the nimbleness, ultra slick shifting, and tiny size of the car are major advantages. Plus is looks 20x better than a Miata (although the new Miata is admittedly an improvement).
I think my dad is the biggest fan of the car, it's been out for 10 years now but he told me he's never seen one on the road, and is "floored" by the looks. Now he wants me to get a hard top.

Had the ap2 been the car that came out the day I bought my 2000 S2000 in September 1999, I probably wouldn't have bought it. The purpose of the S2000 was to be that raw stripped down roaster pure sports car (like the Elise of today).
I mean, I sort of get it, you hit VTEC, and wow, it feels faster - but that's b/c anything bvefore VTEC is bloody gutless. Although 1.8T Golf GTI is much slower than the S in a straight line, it feels bleeding fantastic b/c there's so much grunt starting from 2200 RPM.
Yeah, the 9200 RPM must sound mental (I have a bike, so I can hit 12,500 RPM all day - and it's a great sound); but honestly, it's not a fast car. So losing that 1000RPM by getting an AP2 isn't a huge deal.
The refinement of the AP2 isn't so much that it dials back the car into something less. The edge might be a smidgen less, but it is no less a real sports car than the AP1. However, w/ an AP2, you are getting a bit more of this and that, and I don't know - I like VSA, it allows one to push a bit more w/o the worry of crashing and burning.
It's like shooting with a manual focus film camera, yeah, it's fun, it's challenging, but honestly - digital cameras w/ all the fast focusing wizardry is just better.
IMHO of course, if you're dead set on a 7 yr old AP1, do it! It's still a fantastic car.

I would get a CR! AP1 rawness with AP2 refinement. Get an AP1 ECU
to have 9k on tap and have the best of both worlds. After cryo treating the internals I would have no worries.
