I'm curious why the STi is being considered but not the EVO? also what do you want this car for (all out performance or a status symbol)? The STi will never be the head turner that the 350z is and the 350z will never have the performance of the STi. The 350z is not that fast, it's quick but there are a lot of cars that are quicker. Also the only way to really make the Z fast is through forced induction which is very expensive and usually too big of a step for most people. The STi on the otherhand can be easily upgrade to huge horsepower for very little money. Vishnu Performance said their Stage1 STi(exhaust and piggyback < $2000) can spin all four tires from a rolling start in first gear. That's quick.
Also, the STi is much more practical with 4 doors and a real trunk, rather than a couple of large glove boxes and a rear deck for your portfolio. And the AWD gives you great performance regardless of weather.
Personally I get my kicks out of performance. I could care less what other people think of my car. So I'd say an STi between those two.

I just asked why the EVO wasn't under consideration since both are nearly identical but the EVO is about $2000 cheaper. The same question would be asked if someone posted a message for which roadster is the ultimate package and the cars under consideration were: Boxster, TT, 350z, and Z4. Everyone here would ask "where's the S2000?". There are plenty of valid reasons not to consider the EVO, but I was just curious why.

Totally correct. Mitsu engineers good vehicles, but they produce crap. I've drive both vehicles (EVO and STi) and the quality and feel (both subjective) of the Subaru is far superior to the Mitsu. Same goes for Nissan/Renault. My boss drives a G35C 6mt and its a great car. He loves the feel and looks of the car, but after only a few months of owning he is complaining about the poor fit and finish (the car has rattles that can't be pinpointed, but nothing of major concern).
If you must choose between the STi and the Z, take the Sti (even if only for the 300bhp/300lb-ft)
