The Miata was a roadster for the masses.... Not a bona fide sportscar....
It is and has been just about the most legitimate bona fide sports car on the market, IMO. Supercar, no; sports car, yes.

I say it is a traditional roadster..... Don't think he has enough power in stock form to be honest. The FD Rx7 was Mazda's last bona fide sports car unless you call the Rx8 one, but I never liked the aesthetic on that car but I know it put out some good figures....

The s2000 and the FD Rx7 were always on my short list. Prefer the Honda for reliability......

Everyone has a different definition, but to me, the smaller/simpler/lighter Miata = more of a sports car. Bigger/heavier/more powerful FD = a little more in the supercar direction.

The S2000 does a fantastic job of having most of the Miata's minimalist sportscarness, with very nearly the same power/weight as the FD. Good job, Honda!

Yeah, you are right.... I am equating more impressive stats with definition. That is not all that a sportscar makes... I stated earlier that the Mx5 was iconic and paved way for S2000 so I have a lot of respect for what Mazda has done with Mx5 in automotive history..

Now if they made an FD Rx7 roadster..... I'd be in one of those....

Haha... Maybe not the craziest question...... Because I almost bought a 1993 FD Mazda Rx7 back in 1998 and I found the perfect one in silver with red leather like I wanted.... Guess what???? Automatic.... LOL

No thanks...... Not to mention I lived in apartment at time and didn't want to park that beauty on the street.....

Ha, funny, to me the only thing that keeps the S2000 from being my perfect daily is that it's a roadster and not a fixed-roof coupe!

The wind noise over my 120-mile/day commute is fatiguing and taking its toll on my hearing
I'm contemplating replacing it with a 996, but I'd really rather have this:

Did Mazda mention anything about when they'll reveal engine specs? I'm hearing rumors about next months auto show in Paris.

Probably not until they have them nailed down! Those cars were definitely not production ready, I would guess they haven't determined exactly how much power they are making, etc. This is looking like a late 2015 release at this point.
