I think FR-S power/weight will be reasonable - 190 hp and 2500 lbs, I'd bet. Slightly less powerful and slightly lighter, giving similar speed in a fun package. Should be torquier, though, which will make it a little more fun around town.

Nice thing about a turbo motor is you can tune it for a little more power/torque. Might be able to get upwards of 220 hp and torque via Cobb (or some other tuner), which would be a blast!

Then again, their marketing, and their teaming up with Fiat on this project might suggest otherwise. Then again what are they supposed to say about it #sameasthelastone #25yearsofincrementalchange

Dammit, September 3rd seems so far away all the sudden. We need someone to catch this thing in the wild.

They could release a MazdaSpeed version and get away with it. The platform is more than capable, but buyers may not be willing to spend the money if the price goes up too much beyond $30-35k.

Actually I take that back. In terms of sheer speed, a base Cayman isn't that fast. http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...an_first_test/
It's about a fast as an S2000 in a straight line. Viewed in that context, I can see a Mazdaspeed Miata being a contender. I doubt it would have the balance of a Cayman in aggressive handling though.

The wait and see hype model doesn't work for me. Mazda has been building some good cars of late. Hopefully this is some serious improvement

Only reason I mentioned a 2.3L is because they revealed the drivetrian of the next gen miata

The chief engineer was there and he was stating how this miata would be a revolutionary design, maybe that preview was a 2.3 with a turbo to make it a mazdaspeed miata?

like marioshi said the base car could stick to the 'formula' but the mazdaspeed could be a kick ass little car.

Hmm, can't find info about a 2.3 anywhere. This article is interesting but its CNET so not sure on accuracy.

Power estimates of 98-150 seem especially suspect. Even if weight does drop to 2100 that puts us back as square one of Miatadom...

I kinda doubt Mazda would step back from the already measly 167 hp especially if they are going turbo (FE gains already why cut power further).

Actually I think is the 1.4 from the Abarth but power should be around 185hp

I'm hoping it has at least 200hp and turbo

If it's a 2.3 with a turbo it would have to make 200+. Why bother with an engine that large with a turbo to make 180. If the speed version really makes 250+ that would be incredible.

All the articles I'm seeing are claiming a 2 liter motor. Even that with a turbo has to be pushing north of 180. If it really loses 220lbs it's gonna be a legit quick car!

I've been following the ND for quite sometime and I'll just hope the weight drops to 2150-2250, use a 2.0 DFI or 2.3 skyactiv, with atleast 200HP. 1.5L turbo with 185-190HP is fine as well.

Mazdaspeed version should be everything a base ND is but with a small turbo putting out 240-260HP, nice Recaros, & a real "sport" suspension. The factory Bilstein "sport" suspension is a joke.
