2016 Mazda MX-5 (ND) to be unveiled Sep 3. 2014 at Laguna Seca
After all of the mule spottings and artist renderings, it looks like Mazda's finally going to reveal the 2016 MX-5 at its home turf. Exciting stuff considering their improved styling lately. Mazda posted an official teaser. Is that a turbo I hear?

Lets look at it by the year:
1990: 2200 lbs / 116hp = 19
1994: 2300 lbs / 128hp = 18
1999: 2300 lbs / 140hp = 16.5
2001: 2400 lbs / 155hp = 15.5
2006: 2500 lbs / 167hp = 15
My prediction is that it become a solid 13.5 lbs per horsepower just because that would put it in line with previous generational changes.
2500 lbs, 185 hp is my guess. I will throw in much smaller displacement then 2.3 as well. I think it will be a turbo 1.5 unit.
Honestly, this is probably aimed squarely at the FR-S so I am doubtful we will see base Cayman beating specs, at least right off the bast.

That would be a big seller in this country and Mazda has to know that. They have no other car like RX8 that a car like that would steal sales from so what is the holdup? If they are worried about the traditional formula, get past it already. At least put a low pressure 2.0 liter turbo in that people could tinker with. But the tiny 1.whatever engines in your Japan spec cars.
If you have to keep it low powered than put out a new RX7 for cripes sake.
As far as weight going down, the MR2 Spyder was 2200 pounds not that long ago so less than 2400 is in the realm of possibility.

As for it being a "big seller" that all depends on the price IMO.

Definitely a turbo spinning in that teaser. I'm with Marioshi - I'd bet on a 1.5L turbo engine.
I think FR-S power/weight will be reasonable - 190 hp and 2500 lbs, I'd bet. Slightly less powerful and slightly lighter, giving similar speed in a fun package. Should be torquier, though, which will make it a little more fun around town.
Nice thing about a turbo motor is you can tune it for a little more power/torque. Might be able to get upwards of 220 hp and torque via Cobb (or some other tuner), which would be a blast!

If the did a Mazdaspeed version, then I'd expect the bigger numbers.

We are never going to see Cayman beating numbers from a Miata. That was never what the car was meant to be. If Mazda decides to take on the Cayman, it almost certainly won't be with a Miata platform.
