I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in the future, more true driving enthusiasts prefer PDK style transmissions than manuals.
I'm seeing it already on the Porsche forums. Everyone is enamored with the PDK, even the track rats. Most of the folks are not just saying that it's faster, but taking advantage of the PDK lets them focus their attention on braking points and turn in, helping their driver development. I went for some hot laps (as a passenger) in one a PDK equipped 2013 Cayman at a track day this summer, and to say it's impressive is an understatement. Not sure I'm ready to give up my shifter either, but they're already converting a large percentage of the Porschephiles.
Maybe things have changed, but the PDK used to overheat with track use.

Prompted by your comment, I did a bit of searching - seems the early versions of the PDK had liquid cooled clutches, but the gears were just in transmission fluid like a normal gearbox. (There was some discussion that PDKs at the time had just as many overheating issues as manual transmissions, and further discussion whether the "limp mode" due to overheating was the transmission or actually the engine.) Some comments I read said that as of 2011, PDKs have their own oil cooler, and are now of absolutely no concern for track days. I'm not sure about full-on racing, though.
