I think the only reason the rx8 didn't sell well is it's price tag. It wasn't up to par with it's competition. Even though rotaries are known for bad gas mileage, in a car that weighs 2200lbs it wouldn't be as bad. And nobody could make the argument that they're unreliable because you'd have a warranty.

I heard this was going to be 1900 lbs a while back and I knew that was BS. 2,200 would be decent but if it's a 1.5L only making something like 140 hp I'm not interested. Heck even at 200 hp and 2,200 lbs it won't be that spectacular. 25K can get you an 05 Elise at 1,900 lbs and 190 hp today.
It can also get you an early 00s Z06 Corvette. It's silly and pointless to compare new cars with warranties to used cars without warranties - especially something as boutique as a Lotus.
Or a Ferrari 308 or Mondial... You are right to compare used and new cars like that. That Lotus is no joy to drive as a daily, Miata is much more forgiving.

Is this Miata the one that has a shared platform with Alfa Spyder?

Not feeling it. I like the light weight idea, but Toyota tried 2200 with a wimpy engine and gave you the MR2 spyder and look how that fared. If they want to attract more buyers, give them what they have complained about for years, a little more power. It does not have to be 300hp, but if you get the light weight part, add an engine that competes a little from the factory with room to grow with mods.

I'd be a little more enthused if it was at least a 1.8 turbo to start with. Not sure how much air you can shove through a 1.5 unless it has some tough internals.

Maintenance on any vintage ferrari will drain your pocketbook... Can't compare the 2.

With regards to the MR2, that was toyota's weak attempt at a roadster. Mazda will not ruin the MX-5's reputation by releasing junk... imo

They tried that with the RX8 and we see how that worked out.

A Miata is a Miata, plain and simple. It's not for everyone and as usual, haters gonna hate.

I, for one, hope they don't destroy the car by trying to turn it into something it was never supposed to be.

1.3L Turbo is a worrisome. The low displacement with turbo scares me with respect to a smooth power delivery. Hopefully, Mazda proves me wrong.

The styling is nice but not a knockout. Seems like a mild re-skin of the outgoing model. But maybe that's what they were after. As for a 1.3L turbo.....dunno. Not excited by that news flash. The 2.0L Skyactiv engine in the Mazda 3 puts out 155HP / 148 lb ft. Not exactly an indication of good things to come from a derivative with 1/3 less displacement.

I think I'll wait to see what the Italians can do with the styling and, hopefully, a more potent engine. Hopefully Alfa puts a little sexy into this affordable roadster chassis.

Official conclusions reached by me:

-I'm sure it will be fun to drive, regardless of how fast it is.
-I hope it looks better than that.

That is all. You may now return to bickering.

25K is 25K, the second you drive a car off the lot it's used. Unless you're dead set on a warranty who gives a crap. Do you drive a car or a warranty? Also the majority of Miata owners I know (about 40 of them locally) don't daily drive their Miatas either. They're all small, cramped, noisy sports cars with a stiff ride and no luggage room. In fact one of the most die hard locals who happens to be the president of the local Miata club just sold his to get a bigger more comfortable daily. I don't hate Miatas, they're a lot of fun but for the bang for the buck I'm not too excited about this new offering.

P.S. I've owned 2 Miatas (93LE 1.6 and 97 1.8) and a Lotus Elise and I've tried daily driving all 3 cars before. They all suck for commuting.

I would probably buy a next gen Miata if it weighed sub 2,200 lbs and they used the RENESIS out of the RX-8. That was a butter smooth engine and I never had any trouble with my 05 RX-8. (averaged 19 mpg)

The 2.3 turbo from the ms3 in a Mazdaspeed variant would be nuts but that aint happening. Looks good and should be a fun little car as usual.
