2012 STI - blaaaa... 330hp...

I'd infinitely rather see them get the car below 3000 lb. than add power. Lighter weight is (or should be) the future of performance, as it brings greater efficiency as well. And it's more fun. Win/win/win.
Regarding fuel efficiency, I did a 462 mile tank bringing the 500+hp LS2 RX-7 up from TX, with a 15.9 gallon fill: 29mpg. On a recent trip from Providence to Atlanta, I averaged just over 27mpg for the trip, while averaging 70mph including three ~10-minute stops (only two stops for gas, still arrived in ATL with 5/8 tank).
Imagine what that car (2800 lb., low CdA) would get for mileage with a modern turbo 4-cylinder powerplant...

These cars are are almost 40K brand new at their current level. More power would push them into the stupid expensive category. Mitsu and Subaru are aware of the aftermarket and it's extremely easy make more power with these cars.

I would actually like to see less mechanical and electrical wizardry on these cars. All the selectable differential, yaw control, yada, yada, could disappear. As far as I'm concerned, these are crutches to improve/assist handling in a nose-heavy fwd economy car that wasn't designed to handle. Put the cars on a diet (3800# evo, seriously?), put in a basic stout 4-spider center diff, 6-speed, LSD rear, balanced weight distribution (wagon?), a well sorted suspension, 300hp, and I would consider one of these cars again. Right now, they are just bloated boy racers.
