Because Porsche is stingy with power,
Edit: 911 gets 350hp, 911s gets 400hp Both are still the top two NA 6-cyl engines for production cars IIRC.

350 hp & 400hp sounds like a lot, until you think that the Mustang 5.0 has 412 hp, the Camaro SS has 426 hp, & the Challenger has 470 hp. There used to be a time when 911's had quite a bit more power than those cars costing a mere fraction of what the 911 costs.
Mustang GT :
1985 : 210 hp
1990 : 225 hp
1995 : 225 hp
2000 : 260 hp
2005 : 300 hp
2012 : 412 hp
Porsche Carrera :
1985 : 231 hp
1990 : 247 hp
1995 : 285 hp
2000 : 296 hp
2005 : 325 hp
2012 : 350 hp
Just for comparison :
Chevrolet Corvette :
1985 : 230 hp
1990 : 245 hp
1995 : 300 hp
2000 : 345 hp
2005 : 400 hp
2012 : 430 hp
BMW M3 :
1985 : 192 hp
1990 : 192 hp
1995 : 240 hp
2001 : 333 hp (there was a model change so there were no 2000 M3's, went to E46 M3's in 01')
2005 : 333 hp
2012 : 414 hp
I suppose you can say when they came out with the "S" model, that became the competitor to the regular Vette, M3, etc, but I'm just of the belief that even if you're a "lowly" regular Carrera owner you should be getting the best Porsche has to offer. Some will say Porsche charges the extra $10K because they can, but I'm one owner that previously had a Carrera that will probably not be a Porsche owner again. I just firmly believe that if you buy a Porsche you should be getting the best technology they can provide at that platform level, save the ridiculous "S" or powerkits, etc

^ Or you could look at it the other way. Drivers who don't need/want that extra 50hp get to save $10k by getting the base model...
But I do agree. It is dumb when companies actively make a car worse just so that they can have a mre expensive version too.
