Default 2011 STi Sedan vs 2011 Evo X GSR

Sold my wife's Cooper S and looking for her next car. She likes both the Evo X and the 2011 Sti sedan. From the research I've seen the Sti is probably a better daily driver being a bit more cushy, more low end torque, slightly better interior materials/ergonomics. Evo X is more fun to drive, easier to get more power out of, slightly worse interior materials and design. Evo X seems to be pretty reliable powertrain wise and I've read some issues about late model WRX/STi with #4 piston ringland failure issues.

Any thing else to consider when cross shopping these two? The car will be a daily driver and occasional autocross/track car at local events, not considering SCCA prep for STU/BSP or anything like that.

Thanks!

I haven't heard anything good about Subaru's willingness to stand by their products. They invalidate people's warranties for Autox'ing and refuse to honor powertrain warranties when STI engines go pop.

I think Mitsubishi is the same thing. The running joke on the Evo boards is that you can't void the warranty by modding because it was automatically voided when you drove it off the lot.

If she is going to keep it stock than STi, especially as a DD. If she wants to mod a lot and have less warranty issues than Evo X all the way

Either way we'll probably just do boltons and a tune, no upgraded turbo etc. Something like 320-350 WHP range. Her daily commute isn't far, maybe 4 miles each way so comfort isn't a big deal. She daily drove a S2000 for a few years and the Cooper S wasn't exactly comfortable with the Koni shocks set to stiff for autocross.

Some reviews I've seen on the STi also make it seem like it's pretty slow out of the box. Slower than the regular 09+ WRX and I've seen some modded stage 2 cars only trapping about 107-108 mph in the 1/4 mile which is pretty low.

I've read Evo X GSR's kill clutches pretty fast when you start turning up the boost. But a lot of those people are probably driving the crap out of them. For reference the TSB updated clutch in my previous 00 S2000 lasted until I sold the car at 145K miles and was still working great.

I think the Evo X has a more robust manual transmission than the STI.

True but it's a 5spd instead of a 6spd.

Evo X hands down. Having owned Evos and having Subaru friends, the Evo is way more stout!!!

Either car would make a very good all-season daily driver, but I'd choose the EVO for the crisper handling and sharper driving dynamics. Yes, I've driven them both.
