The market is what it is, and used diesels command a premium due to fuel savings and better longevity.

That's been the long problem with the TDI, an actual excellent engine (that usually has no problems) wrapped around a complete cluster of a car (that has nothing but problems). Put that Engine in a Honda and bam.. you have a nice car. Although I was behind a 5-8 year old one yesterday in my S2000 and the thing was spitting out black smoke and almost choking me to death... But that's rare.

I've got a 2000 Golf TDI that is boring to drive but I can find no reason to get rid of it. I usually put fuel in it every 575 to 600 miles and could easily push it longer. The car has roughly 175,965 miles on right now and I have never had to add oil between oil changes every 8000 to 10,000 miles. In the summer running the AC I get 44 to 46 mpg and in the winter 48 to 50 mpg and I do not baby the car.
You will probably pay more for oil changes and maybe the timing belt but at least on oil changes they are not as often as on a gasser. There are trade offs but in general they are worth it.
Like people said above you will very likely have peeling interiors but the TDI's are a different breed of VW.
Note also that I have become a fan of diesels. We have not had a gas burner to drive in our household in the last 40 months unless you count the Kawasaki Mule we drive around the farm.

It's true that most VWs are very unreliable. I owned a '96 Jetta before buying the S, and it gave me nothing but problems. I heard many bad things from all other years as well. On the other hand though, I have heard very little negative things about the TDi, and usually I heard raves about how different they are from the other VWs. I personally think they look 'clean' and would easily consider buying one.

My DD is a 2002 Passat with a 1.8, manual and leather interior and upgraded stereo. The fit and finish are better than on any popularly priced Japanese import, and the tactility of the interior is as good as almost any car. My car has been very reliable, but it's been very well maintained and serviced. I would consider a VW again, and love the CC. Some of the Jettas, especially the Mexican built ones, have been more problem prone than their German counterparts, at least until recently.
