Call me crazy, but does anyone else miss the days when econo-shitboxes were ... well econo shitboxes?

Give me a utilitarian car, slab-sides and all with a minimalistic interior and just enough motor to see this plus side of 40 to the gallon on the highway, for a cheap price -- make it reliable and I am happy.

Instead we keep getting these cars that look like the progeny of Batman and Robin, for a premium with increasingly poor fuel economy. What gives?

I do, except with me its more in the compact truck line. Four wheel drive and the upgraded engine option (I5-V6) is all I would want, I don't need power windows, power locks, heated seats and mirrors, and all the other foo-foo options more suited to a Lexus. Hell, given the choice I'd rather even have vinyl interior and a rubber floor so I can just hose the damn thing out. But you can't get four wheel drive and the upgraded engine without adding umpteen different "option packages" propelling the price well over the 20 grand mark.

What ever happened to trucks that you're just supposed to beat the hell out of?

I am not sure I undersand your comments sometimes, Steve C. It seems that you are not a fan of Honda, or imports in general.... Why did you buy the S2000, I am curious. Your comments about Hondas have been consistently negative in this and other threads - and you are certainly entitled to your opinion. And it's not a flame at all, please understand.

That being said, I think the new design is very cool looking. I own the much maligned '02 Si, and I have to tell 'ya, it's a terrific automobile. The hatchback is practical, it's an unusual looking car.

For my money, yes, it's ok for an economy car to be economy car, but why does it have to look boring? I personally like an unusual looking automobile. Esthetics of an object are important (to me).

I love the look of that Civic, interior and exterior!

And clearly, that ain't no econo-shitbox nor was it intended to be.
May I suggest GM for you economy shitbox needs...

Is it just me or does it look like you have to either roll around the C pillar to sit in the back or have both legs amputated to fit?

I like it too. Unfortunately we won't get it, if we did I would seriously consider it as a second vehicle.

Hi Guys

Those pics at the start of the thread are the production ready pics...not a prototype. So, the triangular exhausts stay as do the funky dials inside. A more complete presentation can be found on Honda's UK website.

The car will be initially offered with four different engines - 1.4, IMA, 2.2 Diesel and 1.8 Vti. The 1.8 will be capable of a sub 9 sec 0-60 time and still return 41 miles per UK gallon.

My contact at Honda UK says that this five door version will hit the showrooms in Dec and the three door will follow in mid 2006. At that time, Honda will be launching the Civic Type RR, which will feature a 2.4 Vtec.

So, I think I'll have one of those in vivid blue for my next beater
