I mean it's quite possible for someone to cross-shop a S2000 vs EVO.
the term cross-shopping generally implies like objects.
your wife won't leave the house looking for shoes and come back with a purse (well, she probably will, but you know what i mean )

I can't imagine someone with a family buying the M5 as their only vehicle...
if/when i need to replace our family sedan (a 740), why WOULDN'T i look at an M5??

Because it will cost 100K to have a family sedan that will collect door dings and cookie crumbs the same as anything else. Seems like a large investment when 99% of the time a cheaper vehicle will perform just as well. Nice to drive and a good status item, but I would rather have a less expensive family car and a sports car on the side for the same total expenditure.
you have to realize, logistically, some people can only afford to have one car per spouse or worse, one car per family.
what if you live in downtown NY or chicago - in a condo...where are you gonna park your fleet of cars?
sure, you can throw money at parking spots, etc., but 2, 3 or 4 cars doesn't make "sense".
i can't afford to have a new M5 and anything more than my S2000 as the 3rd car....so for me, i'd blow my brains out on an M5, and live with my lowly S2000.
me and my wife both need people haulers as one drops the kids to school, and the other picks them up.
so let's assume i get a subaru sedan and a 997 (instead of an M5 and an S2000)....i'd never get any use out of the 997....pretty large investment as well, no?
btw, if my wife had her way, my S2000 would be long gone.....

It's hard NOT to like a a sedan that can carry 4 comfortably and trap damn near 120mph in the 1/4 mile.
Remember people that buy this car as a daily driver already have a 997S or C6 Z06 or heck, a Modena for a weekend toy. The wife is driving the LX470 or Range Rover or Cayenne.

when your a mid level or upper level professional, was a sports car owner in their younger years, still have the car enthusiast in their blood, appreacites decades of refinement on the same model, and has a family, youd consider the M5.. same reason they manage to sell E55's and RS6's in the same price range...
if you have some time, you can avoid the markup for these cars and order the car straight from the manufacturer under european delivery... this way you can buy at MSRP + taxes...
6th gear ratio is 1:1 in the 7 speed tranny...
3rd through 6th are all closely ratio'd between 1:1 and 1.8:1... talk about pulling up top

so what? ...you vacuum it.

My car is completely out of the equation with the kids; Id get another car to haul kids around, but like PLYRS_3 said, I live downtownish (Toronto) and I have room for ONLY 2 cars. An M5 would be a great choice for someone like myself who wants a fast(er) car but may still, every now and then, need to put kids back there.
Im going to die being impractical though. No point in having an interlude of logic in between birth and death. The 2 seater stays.
BTW - Im looking to build an extension onto my garage to house my new bed, TV, fridge, etc....
And BTW, your wife has nothing against the S2000 as a car, she hates US. She hates coming around the corner infront of your house to find an impromptu front yard BBQ and about 30 S2000s out front with Mike and Vince barking out orders for more beer and less sideways baseball hats.
