When I'm in need of a very fast sedan and have some $90K in change, I know where to look. But then again, I could have an RL for half the price and it'll be ALL I need in a luxurious and comfortable family sedan.

I can't imagine NOT cross-shopping them.
they're the same price. they have the same performance (near enough). Both are sporty/luxury imports (probably) aimed at the same people.
Basically they're interchangeable except as I mentioned the rear seats.
911S is probably more fun in the twisties and M5 probably does better on the highway.
99% of the people I know could live with either as a DD. Most people drive with no rear seat passengers and/or have another car/van/suv for when they need more room.
IMO
One is a GT car with some sportscar ability, the other is a sportscar with some GT ability (nice, rich interior, somewhat compliant ride).
Very different cars, for very different purposes.
Even though the m5 has a massive engine, it does still goes 4000 lbs. If you took it out on any technical course it is still not a racer. The Porsche would be at a severe disadvantage on a long straight, but like you said in the twisties it would not be close.
Very different cars. Something similar to this was when Best Motoring had the old 996 911 vs. M3 vs. EVo's & they had the M5 in there all racing around Tskuba. Though the M5 had a 100 hp advantage (back then) it still got eaten up by the other cars.
One is a musclecar sedan, the other is an agile true sportscar.

I guess that I'm still missing the purpose of this car.
For $90k, you could buy a Z06, Viper, 911s, or endless other sports cars. For an extra $10k, you could buy a GT3.
I can't imagine someone with a family buying the M5 as their only vehicle... in my mind, anything with 500hp that costs >$80k is supposed to be a toy, not a commuter car. That being the case, why buy the back seats and two tons of garb? You can easily get more perfomance for your money.

I would venture to guess the target audience is someone who is a car enthusiast and needs the room to haul people around -- clients, coworkers and on occassion the family. I too don't see the 911 as a direct comparison -- you *can* shove midgets and kids in back but no adult that you wish to remain on friendly terms with if the trip is more than 5 miles.
