Default 2004 RX-8 for $14,500 or 2001 S2000 for $14,800?

RX-8 (blue)
model year 2004
mileage 53,000miles
2 owners (1st owner drove 40,000miles in 2years)
Price: $14,500

S2000 (silverstone with red interior)
model year 2001
mileage 49,200 miles (roughly 7000miles per year)
2 owners
price: $14,800

Both clean carfax and condition but I think the RX-8 is driven by a younger person and S2000 is adult driven.

Which one is a better buy??

Depends on what you need it for but I would buy the S for two reasons, the convertible aspects and the gas milage.

If you need four seats and it would be your only car I might have a different answer.

Exactly. If practicality is not issue, there is no question the S2000 is the way to go.

Is the RX-8 an auto? Avoid that.

Other than that, an RX-8 is essentially a four-seater coupe S2000.

The RX-8 is a great car. Decent power, good handling, comfortable, practical, yet fun to drive.

The S2000 is more of a raw sports car that offers a bit more power, better handling, at the expense of comfort and practicality.

The RX-8 is a lot more forgiving than an 01 S2000 as well, so depending on your experience with sports cars, you may be less prone to be in an accident in an RX-8

There have been quite a few occasions where the RX-8 was perfect for what I needed when an S2000 wouldn't have been a choice (bringing friends along, storage space). Having owned a small roadster before (a Miata), there were times where I wished it was a bit more practical. I know I will experience the same issues again if I jump into an S2000.

The S2000 also has a bit better gas mileage, so also let that factor into your decision as well.

That said, you really can't go wrong with either car. I love my RX-8 but its warranty is almost through. Also with increasing gas prices, its time for me to look into something else.

Here is a good review of the RX-8 from Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson...

I agree with the comments so far. If I needed 4doors, I'd have an RX8.

One comment you made though about the driver age...not many drivers who aren't enthusiasts buy the S2000 so I would not expect that either car has been driven like a family car.

I guarantee you, some of us old farts who could originally afford the cars when new beat the piss out of 'em...and I still do.

I wonder how long the RX-8s engine will last? How much do they cost to repair or replace?

Isn't past 50K out of warranty?

The S2000 has been out 7 years and some people have 100K or near 200K on the engine.

Some say the RX-8 is like a 4-seat S2000, it may be in some ways, but the S2000 is more powerful, lighter, quicker and gets better gas mileage.

If those above things don't matter at all they they probably are very similar, but many people value those features. On the other hand the RX-8 has rear reats so if that's important it would be a good way to go.

As long as you keep the RX8 pretty much stock, or just NA mods the durability will be fine. It's when you turbo the engine that you get into problems.

And adding rear seats & the corresponding metal will usually make a car heavier, slower, and affect the gas mileage. Try strapping on 2 seats & the metal reinforcement needed to put them in a car and see how fastt he S2000 would be. The RX8 is about 250 lbs heavier than the S2000.

If convenience, back seats & comfort are what you are looking for than the S2000. Drop top & top of the line track day handling & the S2000 might fit the bill.
