Hands down the S2000 but I'd get an '03. I tire of shifting at 8000RPM. The Boxster just didn't do it for me, the AP1 is more of a "driver's car" IMO.

If I had to make that decision, I'd choose the '04 S2000. But you should go with the Porche...less S on the road

Please try a search. This topic is covered seemingly weekly in Car Talk, and there's never any new information added to the discussion -- the S2000 fanboys scoff at the Boxster, and the people who have actually driven or owned Boxsters scoff at the fanboys. Somewhere along the line, someone compares the Boxster to a toad.

Not sure if you have driven a Boxster S.

It has good torque pretty much from idle. I can't imagine a slightly higher torque and a slightly fatter torque could really help the S2000 that much. We are honestly talking light years of difference between the two. I love the high rev nature of the S2000, but the truth is the S2000 is not a great everyday car, it really needs to be revved to function well. The nature of the beast. The S2000 nakes no pretension about being an everyday car. I'm sure the 04's are a bit better but the Boxster S has a far more flexible engine when it comes to puttering around town.

Exactly my point -- informed, constructive comparisons are few and far between on s2ki.com, as most people here think the S2000 is the best thing since sliced bread and foam at the mouth at any suggestion that other cars could be as good or better.

You do know that the Boxster S has ~50% more torque, nearly double the trunk space, and a significantly roomier cabin than either generation of the S2000, right? That being the case, please elaborate on your comment.

Steve
The Boxster owners at ppbb.com give much respect to all sports cars. They don't trash talk the S2000 like the S2000 fanboys trash talk just about any car. The S2000 is a neat package for what it is.
If you can afford the 10K, get the Boxster S. Just to name a few. It has 3 years of warranty left. It will depreciate less. Better wheels and brakes. Better exhaust notes. Porsche service is much much better. Oil change is $40 if you do it yourself and it takes less than 20 minutes. Much of the service you can do yourself and you don't have to drop the engine like some people claim.
If you want performance, buy a beat up pre-2000 Boxster for 19K and drop a 3.4L 996 engine for about 12K. That should put you in the S2000 territory, price wise, with 300+hp. This conversion is being done a lot and successfully.

Sincerely,
favaks

I had never heard about that, thats really a great idea. With porsches usual mid-engine layout, is it safe to say that a number of there motors can be swapped?

As a daily driver myself, id take the porsche. But i can defend the 04's daily driveabilty... its still quite easy and quite comfortable.

pedal/fanman:

not sure how to elaborate, but let me give it a shot.....

to preface, i had an '00 for 3.5 years - put 85K on it - year-round daily driver (including winter with snow tires).

now have an '04 for the last 7 months and have already put 21K on it...in other words, i drive a lot...lots of seat time in an S2000 over the past 4+ years.

yes, i've driven a boxster S extensively - a co-worker (now an associate) has one. been driving it on and off, every now and then since he got it at x-mas in 99.

driveability:
let's see, i can putter around effortlessly around town in my '04...no need to rev it, clutch and gearbox are effortless (i assume this is a good thing, right?). however, my definition of puttering is 30-70kmh. not sure what yours is.

space: i guess if you need the space the boxster has more, other than my owners manual, i don't really need space for anything else. but, how much space does one really need to putter around? groceries? i can (and have) put in quite a bit when required....i also use the passenger side seat and footwell in a pinch....is the boxster owner needing to "load up" accordingly everyday? regardless, i would be a fool not to concede the space advantage to the boxster with the caveat that it's only an issue (or worth debating over) if it's a steadfast requirement.

on the other point of a roomier cabin, dunno...i weigh a buck-fifty. from that perspective, the boxster is actually wasteful (said in jest).

in the '04, the torque (discussed ad nauseum on this board), is definitely delivered in such a manner as to appease the "putterers" of the world. i consider the difference in '04 to pre-'04 to be "light years" of difference.

if i'm not revving it to get going, how can it NOT be considered an everday driver?? it's as easy to drive as my neighbours civic, yet i can point and shoot whenever i want....

and please don't quote absolute numbers (50% more torque) as real-world performance will not commensurate.

oh and not that this matters, but went to the track on friday and flogged the car all day - put 500km/300m on it....performed flawlessly....my boxster pal was there and his car started leaking coolant after the first session (just overflow, but he was having a heart-attack )

regards-

Care to elaborate? I would sincerely be interested in hearing what constitutes "light years" in your opinion.
