What kind of servicing do they do on the VANOS? I've got 30k miles on my M3 and haven't noticed any problems. Is this something that is adjusted at the scheduled inspections?

The M3 is a beautiful piece of machinery, but cost of ownership is high
Your statement is a common one, and one that seems to be repeated by folks all over who have never actually owned a BMW, Porsche ... insert other German makes here.
As to the original question. Tough call. The EVO has 4 doors and is cheaper to make faster and perhaps cheaper to track -- but it is noisier and comes with an interior that belongs in the late 80's from a company that may very well go tits up in the near future.

as per the intellichoice.com the cost of ownership over a 5 year period for both the Evo and the M3 are "worst than average". The Evo at $40K and the M3 at $55k+ His used M3 will fair even worse..
Your warrantee does not cover cost of ownership....
Instead of thinking you know everything about M3's......why don't you get off of BMW and Porsche's nutz "insert other German makes here" and do some research.

The M3 doesn't cost anything to own except gas and tires. The tires will run about as much as the tires for the Evo will. If anything, maintenance on the Evo will be more because of the need to replace the expensive brake pads and rotors which are covered under the BMW maintenance program.
Like Steve said, with the CPO 100K warranty and an additional $1100 for maintenance up to 100K, you're looking at a good amount of driving for a cost that has been paid up front.

I was toying with a EVO MR, and really any EVO is nice. But saw the $36K price and said that's almost as much as a 330. With the e90 bimmer you get 4-doors 6-speed MT, free maintance for 40K miles (I think), better resale, better image. Not as fast as a M3, but all around a great car.
Plus, hate to think about this, but the 3-series has stability control, and to me looks as if it'd be safer in a crash. I know EVO has awd, but people are putting them in the trees all the time just the same.
Don't know the crash test results of the two cars, but bmw puts a lot of safety features in the car. Stability control has been determined to be a greater safety feature than air bags. The only safety feature projected to saves more lives (statastically) are seatbelts.
