True. That's the biggest weakness of the S2000 as a driver's car. The steering is well weighted and precise enough to accurately place the car, but there's no great communication coming back from the road to your hands.

The Z4M coupe and the S54 mcoupe have the same transmission. They even have the same 1-2 gear shift grind under load. I think the only difference is the shift linkage.
You can improve the shifting of the Mcoupe with a Ron Stygen shift rod with Delrin bushing and some stiffer tranny mount bushings.
The Z4M coupe is being discontinued after 2008 to make room for the 135i. It's replacement is the Z5 which gets the V8 from the from the new M3, carbon roof and moves up market in price.
You can improve the shifting of the Mcoupe with a Ron Stygen shift rod with Delrin bushing and some stiffer tranny mount bushings.
The Z4M coupe is being discontinued after 2008 to make room for the 135i. It's replacement is the Z5 which gets the V8 from the from the new M3, carbon roof and moves up market in price.

Yes, I have the same 5-speed trans and it sucks.That 5-speed made me get the SMG in my E46 M3 so I wouldn't have to deal with crappy shifting any more.
Swapping the 6-speed is a little expensive.

ugh there is now a leak in my driveway....and the steering rack is making all sorts of noises....
I'm starting to miss my S2000....better shifter, reliability, tossability, build quality....

Just thought I'd share a bit:
I cannot stress how great the brakes are in this car. They really are a step above the S2000 which already has a good braking system. Plus it's like having VTEC from 2500RPMs to 7500RPMs: amazing engine.
On monday I'm getting the sport-mode button mod which should help throttle response under 2000RPMs.
I may also swap in a MZ4 shifter in spring if I still have the car

I have owned a 2000 M coupe for over 4 years, 60,000+ miles.
Nearly flawless, not a single problem worth mentioning. No rear subframe/diff issues
Absolutely a blast to drive every day. Truly fast in real world terms, the S52 engine is great around town, but dies off at the top end. Ridiculously fun in the snow on some snow tires.
Getting sideways is easy, controllable and ADDICTIVE. Urethane rear subframe bushings are a must and the stock shocks are gone at 40k miles.
Highly recommended, especially if you do your own maintenance.
