Default 2000-01 Audi S4

I was checking out pricing on these cars and they seem to be a pretty good deal for what they are. I found quite a few with between 85-100k for about $14,000 or so and they look amazing and I hear they are an awsome car, the 2000-01 style before the V8 S4 came into play. The motor is the 2.7L Twin Turbo V6 and it's AWD... seems like a pretty good combo to me however what kind of reliability do these cars have I hear Audi/Volkswagen are a down right pain in the REAR and only buy one if german refinement is really worth the headache ownership to you, is this true? Or are they really great cars that I wouldn't have to worry about, I need a car that isn't going to hammer me with ongoing problems and such. Thanks

My cousin just recently bought an A6 with the 2.7T motor in her, fully loaded. He loves it and seems to be holding up well.

Oh, the most important thing, he bought her with 90k miles and she still runs and looks well.

Got it for $20k OTD with various warranties.

I know the search sucks, but you should see what you get with a search. This "question" comes up about every few months.

Anyway, I had an 01 S4 and it was a great car. I never had any troubles with it, but mine was stock. The car is easily modded but it also becomes much more likely to break also. You'll get varying comments that will range from great car to piece of crap and I'll never buy Audi again.

I recommend not buying a modded one, and I'd spend a bit more money to get one with lesser miles if possible. I'd visit audiworld.com and do a lot of reading over there. Mucho information over there.

If you're not going to mod it, get an aftermarket warranty from a reputable company.

You know you WILL have to replace the turbos eventually anyway...

If you're going to mod them anyway, then no biggie.

I have an 01 S4 wagon with 63k miles and it's a great car to drive, but not that reliable. Granted mine has a chip (302hp), but it's torn up three turbos. It's deadly fast (quicker than the S2000), torquey, and quiet, it feels like it's being pulled by an invisible tether. With some coilovers and short shifter it's pretty sporty. I plan to hold onto it for a while, but probably wouldn't buy a used one now just because of the turbo issues.

You can avoid the turbo failure by replacing a few stock items. Read this post from Audi World. Something every potential S4 owner should know:

Replacing BPVs will help responsiveness, and certainly TBB problems are prevalent, but none of those fixes are going to meaningfully extend turbo life.

I owned 2 of them and they're great cars when they're running right which isn't very often. If you get one expect a lot of problems..especially with that kind of mileage.

The other thing that hasn't been mentioned (may be noted in the audiworld.com thread - haven't read it yet), is to make sure you do a through check of the front end. I keep hearing from the S4 owners (there's a few at my work of various stripes) that the front end of the frame is prone to alignment issues. Expensive to remedy, or, let it slide and spend gobs on tires.
