1998 Audi A4.
So an old teacher of mine from high school is selling his 1998 Audi A4 1.8. It has 170k miles on it, which I know is a decent amount. However, I know him pretty well and I know it's been garaged and well maintained. He says the timing belt was changed at 65k and will probably need to be changed pretty soon so he factored that into the price. He's asking 700 dollars for it which is really low. My main question is it worth it to pick it up and immediately sell it to make a quick profit, or drive it for a little bit since it's a really good deal.

Seven hundred bucks isn't a ton of money for a car, especially if it is in decent shape but, based on my experience with a 2000 A4 (1.8/Quatro) I would rather take my money to Vegas and bet hard eights on the craps tables. They break frequently, electical gremlins are common, and the are fairly costly to fix.
So, unless you are in the market for a a cheap car that will most likely require a lot of your attention to keep running and you aren't best buddies with a nearby Audi tech I would opt out. Great rides when they run but I dumped mine the day the warranty ran out.

700 isn't alot of money but still I'd be a very weary purchasing a 12 year old Audi with 170K miles. These cars weren't exactly known for their reliability.
If you found someone to buy it for 2 grand then by all means flip it.

I'd buy it. You can't really go wrong with $700. I bet you can easily flip it for twice that.
If shiz hits the fan and the engine blows up on you, I bet you can still find a buyer for the shell for close to what you originally paid.

I say do it. A lot of problems you can actually try fixing yourself first. Go join vwvortex.com
About the biggest unknown is the shape of the turbo. If they blow, it'll cost to fix, even a rebuilt turbo.
Other than that, it's STILL a very nice car to drive, and looks quite modern still (IMHO). You'll enjoy it I think.
Go for it!
