^ the cut off date for the bearing issue is 2003.5.
All of the ones that fall into the "trouble" period have a extended engine warranty I believe to 100k.
I saw a quote for the SMG failure at ... $14,000.

Correct, they got extended warranties. The failure rate was something ridiculous like 10% in the first few years.
I would never own one of those. Too quirky and unreliable, and the service intervals are stupid.

What is the cost of a used E46 engine or trans??
Also this car is a 2001. Some of the early E46 motors had issues that required BMW to make changes to the motor and replace a bunch of them.

You think a new E46 M3engine is expensive?
Try looking at the price for a new Porsche 986 S engine.
In fact the aftermarket for E46 M3s is so huge that I'm sure you wouldn't have trouble finding an S54 engine.

AMGs and Ms are beasts when it comes to out-of-warranty repair/maintenance costs...
My office is right above our BMW shop and I rarely hear of any issues with the M cars. Now, those 745's are a different story.
But, let's forget we're talking about a BMW in this thread for a moment. Are you buying a used car? Are you buying a used car with more than 50,000 miles? Okay, you're buying something that was not built to last forever and it has enough time under its belt to have an issue. That comes with any used car. So, the real question is whether the value of this used car is such that you feel comfortable enough to think you can get close to your purchase price back out of the car if you have to turn around and sell it yourself? That's just in case you have too many issues you can't financially handle.
There is no way to know what kind of issues you'll have with a used car, so that is how you buy one.

The stock radio in the E46 M is horrible and the 'upgraded' HK system is only marginally better. It is without question the worst stereo in any car over $30K that I have EVER owned.

Over 80K miles on my M and it has been one of the more trouble free cars I have owned. They can be very reliable but if something breaks you will likely be paying an "M Premium" to get it fixed.
