The 996 is my least favorite exterior 911. I'd probably get an 05 997 911 instead.
But of those choices, I'd probably do the Turbo as a daily (AWD and pseudo-backseat.
If just a nice weather car, Cayman S.

how is the overall reliability on the 996tt?
My big issue with my car... some idiot mechanic put a petroleum solution in my brake line... which took out the entire braking system and the clutch slave cylinder... Other than that, things have been pretty good.

High production volume and those looks have contributed to the 996TT's steep depreciation. 993TT is easily fetching more money than 996TT, and I think even the 964 Turbo is holding up better in the used market. The 996TT is amazing value now at the $40k level. That's not much more than '06 Cayman S money.

Unless you really want the raw power and mod potential of the 996tt, I would have to pick the 09 Cayman S. Have you looked at a 997S at all? That might be a good compromise between the two, and you'd still get the updated chassis and interior

i thought the 996 tt, gt2, gt3 dodged the RMS problem due to the engines being designed w/ the GT1 block?

I've had a Cayman... 06 S.
I now have a 996TT.
The Cayman was OK, but the Turbo does it for me.
I've modded mine with PSS10's, GT3 console delete, Trak shifter, EVOMS GT2 Hydro clutch mod, and Fabspeed big ovals.
I love this car, but it's a queen and comes out on cool fair days that are too cold for bikes or the S2K. It flat out rocks me in a straight line, or in the twisties like few cars do.
The CS is good. The TT is more good.
Your results may vary.
