whereas it's not so cool to be driving an older honda/toyota
I'd argue the reason is more based in the fact that most Honda's and Toyota's of that generation rusted out.

70s BMWs (especially early 70s) were not galvanized and rust as well as any other car (with the exception of Alfa Romeos - which went out of it's way to buy crappy Russian steel - so they rusted even faster).

The reason people tend to restore, maintain and keep 70s BMWs compared to many Japanses cars of the era is because they were lots of fun to drive. The same however can be said about fun to drive Japanese cars of the era - there are still a lot of early Datsun 510s and 240Zs running around - they were fun to drive cars and thus people invested the time and money to keep them.

I actually happen to own a 1972 '02 Bimmer - the only BMW I ever owned - and I most certainly was not looking for one when I started my quest for a fun to drive "vintage" car with a rear seat - it just won me over with the combination of practical packaging, good condition, reasonable price, reliability and fun to drive. I honestly doubt that many people associate prestige to a little car that looks like a shoebox, even if it has the roundel on the nose.

[QUOTE=PLYRS 3,Mar 16 2005, 03:17 PM] the spirit of my statement is obviously lost on you.

if it was a TOSS-UP between the S2000 and a Z3/Z4, then i would have taken the Z.

given a higher HPed jap vehicle vs. a slightly to moderately lowered HPed german vehicle, you would defiinitely opt for the german without hessitation.
correct, but with the S2000, i didn't.

on the other hand, when we ended up with the 740, i was crossing shopping the M45/Q45 with the BMW - and bought the lower HP'd german car.

hence i didn't mean it "literally".

i saw loads of them when i was in england last month, not very good looking IMHO. I'd take an acura TSX over it any day and go on another vacation with the rest of the money.

I don't think I would care for a TSX as a replacement for my S-Type. I will be looking at the Acura TL. Your comments about the appearence do concern me. I really need to see a 330i in person. Does anyone know when they will hit the showrooms?

i think a reason for this is because people find it more worthwhile to spend the money to keep these old bmws running because they are "bmws". in the public's eye, it's kinda cool to be driving an older bmw, whereas it's not so cool to be driving an older honda/toyota. heck, there are many people who would rather buy and drive a 6-8 year old bmw, than a brand new honda civic for the same price. so the fact that you still see a good amount of 70s bmw on the road doesn't necessarily mean that they are better built and more reliable cars. it could just be that people are more willing to spend the money to keep them running.
You might be right

If it was me I would wait if I could after reading about the new Lexus IS. From the photo I can tell I prefer the look and the specs look very promising.

Bill, there are some rumors out there.......Acura is going to introduce AWD TL some time next year. That will be a perfect car for you.
