The reason people tend to restore, maintain and keep 70s BMWs compared to many Japanses cars of the era is because they were lots of fun to drive. The same however can be said about fun to drive Japanese cars of the era - there are still a lot of early Datsun 510s and 240Zs running around - they were fun to drive cars and thus people invested the time and money to keep them.
I actually happen to own a 1972 '02 Bimmer - the only BMW I ever owned - and I most certainly was not looking for one when I started my quest for a fun to drive "vintage" car with a rear seat - it just won me over with the combination of practical packaging, good condition, reasonable price, reliability and fun to drive. I honestly doubt that many people associate prestige to a little car that looks like a shoebox, even if it has the roundel on the nose.

on the other hand, when we ended up with the 740, i was crossing shopping the M45/Q45 with the BMW - and bought the lower HP'd german car.

i saw loads of them when i was in england last month, not very good looking IMHO. I'd take an acura TSX over it any day and go on another vacation with the rest of the money.

i think a reason for this is because people find it more worthwhile to spend the money to keep these old bmws running because they are "bmws". in the public's eye, it's kinda cool to be driving an older bmw, whereas it's not so cool to be driving an older honda/toyota. heck, there are many people who would rather buy and drive a 6-8 year old bmw, than a brand new honda civic for the same price. so the fact that you still see a good amount of 70s bmw on the road doesn't necessarily mean that they are better built and more reliable cars. it could just be that people are more willing to spend the money to keep them running.
