'02-'03 996 tt or 997 s?
just a quick question for you car guys, especially some of you porche gurus.
let's say your budget's around 90k, and options are only between those two.
some might say new z06 or whatever, but i wanna have only those two as the option.

I'd drive both and pick the one that I find more enjoyable.
My guess is that it'd be the 997 S, based on it being 374 lbs lighter.
3505 lbs / 415 hp = 8.4
3131 lbs / 355 = 8.8
So the Carrera S is only a tad bit slower, as well.
To be honest though, in the realm of 911s I'd get neither. I'd save up and go for the GT3 instead. 3043 lbs, 380 hp (some dynos suggest much more.)

997 S
I've driven a 911 tt and a C4S, both were great, however from the looks and what I've read, I'd rather have the upgrades of the new model.
Also the tt being awd is a little at times. It holds on so well, you have to be going crazy fast to make it exciting. Also there's no wheelspin at take off, so it's not as exciting as it can be like when I drove a similarly powerful Z06. Hands down the Z06 was more fun to launch.
To me the tt wants to be a GT and a sports car, but IMO it's more of a GT.
Also I tend to prefer NA cars.
I don't race so it's pointless to me if someone tells me the tt is faster, um so what? There's always a faster car. The 997S (IMO) hits the right buttons, it's faster than the 996, it's more refined, according to reviews in the press, it's better in all areas but doesn't fall behind in any (relative to the 996).
Only negative with the 997 is it's new so you have more depeciation, but I tend to prefer new cars, the lost value I can live with b/c you also get the new car smell etc...

Hmmm, this is tough choice. I would say GT3 - but you didn't list that as an option.
The 911 TT engine is an awesome block. It can handle 500+ HP easily. So if you don't plan to track the car regularly, then the TT would be my choice. From a style prespective- its a tie. Some prefer oval headlamps, and therefore want a 997. Some of the 996 complaints(lack of wide body look) were addressed in the 911tt and the 997s.
Personally, between the two 996TT is a better choice.

997s, looks better to me.
i drove a 996tt, and its fast. the power is amazing. but after you get over all that power, you're left with a great gt car, imo. to me it felt like an m3 with lots of power. numb steering, detached from the road, etc. this is, of course, compared to the steering feel of an s2000. and i didn't push hard at all in any corner, i didnt want to wreck a $120k car...
the shifter on the 996tt i drove was amazing. it was some short shift kit, and i forgot what it was called, but it felt incredibly precise. it wasn't as connected as the s2000 shifter, but i liked it better. very precise.
i havent driven a 997s, or a 997, or any other porsche for that matter, but im imagining that they (996 and 997) would all feel the similar as in driver input, response, etc. kinda detached.
if i were to spend $90k on a porsche, i think id look for a GT3 as well, unless i were tired of the road noise, discomfort, harsh ride thing.

Over at Rennlist they are already reporting RMS leaks on the 997. I would take a turbo or better yet a GT3 near that price point. There is one for sale locally in the low $90's.
Of course it's a horrible waste of money next to a Corvette but you'll just have to become accustomed to hearing that.

is gt3 that good?
i thought it was just another carrera with some weight shaved off.
but everyone who has experience with it, raves about it.
personally i'm more into (or rather, "ready to move on" to) gt cars,
but road noise or bad creature comfort and what not,
i think i'm used to it with my current car's crappy coil overs and bumble bee exhaust...

but i just don't like corvettes.
i don't care if it's $10k car with 1000 hp, handles better than mario-kart, reliable than corolla, has emblems of horses and cows instead of flags, interior with more aluminum than nasa, more leather than timberland factory, and weights 1000 lbs. i still won't buy it.
it's just my personal taste.
biased opinion is a scary thing.
