Default 01' Audi S4 6spd vs 02' Subaru WRX auto

WHAT? Yes, hear me out:

I have an 02' Subaru WRX auto w/about 23,000 miles. I like the little b*tch. It is an awesome winter car, has enough room to haul people around and takes abuse without complaining. Getting an auto has kept me from moddin' it just like I had planned.

Unfortunately, it has been almost a year and once again I get the yearly itch to replace it.

Sooooooo I have a good friend that just ordered a brand new S4 and he is trading in his 01' Silver S4....absolutely immaculate in and out and it only has 29,000 miles. The dealership offered him $ 25,000 on trade and that is what he is letting me have it for.

In addition, he wants my R1 after I get if fixed. Since the R1 has only cosmetic damage, I will buy it back from the insurance and have it painted and he is taking off $ 5000 off the Audi price.. . I don't think I will have a problem getting about $ 17,000+ for my WRX so that means that I would have to bring about $ 3000 to the table.

Anywho, I thought I could not let this deal pass but here in the past couple of days I have had second thoughts about the whole thing....I could put the $ 3000 I would be saving in the transaction towards the WRX and make that little thing scream!!

Should I take the deal on the Audi, give the WRX, fixed bike and $ 3000 and run far, far away or should I fix the bike, get about $ 4,000 for it, +$ 3000 I would be saving and modify both Wrex and the S2000?????

WWYD?

01 s4's have leaking problems, but they can be fixed with apr parts for about $1000 and then they are great. get an 02 if you can find one. they are beautiful.

get the s4.

i wouldn't call it beautiful.... but it gets the job done.

and it's not true about all '01s having this so called leaking problem. after a certain manufacturing date, the '01s got the same updated parts as the '02s. someone will have to pipe in at what date this occurred.

the only thing i'd be leary of is the warranty on that bad boy. i wouldn't want a 2.7T in the rather small A4 engine compartment w/o an Audi service dept backing it up. and the third party warranty deals are very sketchy.

tough call, man. what i'd personally do is save the money and take off someplace crazy and make more memories.

good luck,

Yeah, I'd go for the S4 if I were you. I'd drive a manual Pinto over an auto WRX.

Ok, so maybe not, but you get the idea.

S4's are nice. Thirsty, and you will want to mod it all the time. At least until you have a stage III K04 turbo kit and are laying down over 400bhp and pushing close too 500lb-ft of torque.

And THAT will cost ya.

EDIT - Audi's may not be massivly reliable but with an Audi warranty (of which on that car at least a year and 30,00 miles remain) you have nothing to worry about. Besides I hear that if you are going to have problems with an Audi it will be from day one, the car belonging to your friend I assume you have a good idea of it's history.

(I have a 2003 A4 3.0 Quattro, Manual, Sport)

If you mod the S4, the warranty is essentially gone. If they suspect it has been modded at all, Audi will deny the warranty claim, fair or not.

That being said, I have had an A4 and a TT. I bought both new, and sold the A4 after 2 years with no problems, and sold the TT after 5 months w/ 3 trips to the dealer for issues. I really liked my A4 (not so much the TT) but wouldn't want to own one either out of warranty.

If they Audi assure it, and you don't mod it, it is good for 7 yr/100,000 miles I believe, but the dealer will charge $1500 or so for it if they'll do it.

Good luck,

Jeff
