It really comes down to driving experience. My Exige is loads more fun to drive than a Z06. Ultimate speed is not the key to fun. Miata's are a blast to drive and they aren't fast.
That said - A Motorsport Elise, stock from the factory, will probably beat a Z06 (with R-rated tires) around a 2-3 mile road course. As the track gets longer the huge top speed advantage starts to come into play.
I will be interested to see how my stock Exige keeps up with the big guns this year - I will be running A048's this year vs the A039's last year (semi-slick vs street tires). I'm not the best driver, but I did chase down a 600hp Skyline GTR last year (he was on crappy tires) at Gingerman (2-miles track) and Jason Saini was hanging with a Viper while he was driving the car. The Exige is 1700lbs and 190hp, btw.
Granted a new Elise is no Exige or Elise Motorsport, but the car will be fun to drive. I've driven a 120hp Euro-spec car and it was very fun. The Elise is not for everyone, just as the S2000 isn't, but for those that want a pure driving experience there isn't much to beat it.

the z06 doesn't turn heads anymore, the style is dated. the lotus is brand new and most people haven't seeen it yet. plus its so light and makes great power, its very tossable around corners and stuff.
if you want raw torque, horrible interior ergonomics, good looking exterior, get the z06
if you want a high hp/weight ratio, pure exotic looks, brand new design, get the LOTUS

I see him hauling ass through the corners with the GT3 Cup car, not being able to outbrake or outcorner the Elise. braking and cornering are where the Elise excels. The Elise actually passes the F40, and you never see him again. Oh yeah, the Elise has a passenger, too.
As for the Nurburgring, sure, the Vette will without a doubt outrun the Elise, with 14 miles overall and 2 1.4 mile lengths of straight track to play with. I couldn't find anything anywhere that says the Vette is stock, though.
I'm real curious to see how an Elise does against a Z06 at Streets of Willow, or some other track with a lot of corners.

I don't think this was a competitive race and that guy was being a jack ass. During a couple of the stretches the F40 and Porsche actually do open it up and they bus lengths on that car. Don't confuse someone going harder (and stupider) with the car being faster. A f1 driver could make a focus look like it was as fast as an S2000...that doesn't mean it is.

Okay, I've went out and looked up some numbers just for the sake of comparison.
0-60mph:
Z06: 3.9s
Elise: 5.7s
Quarter Mile:
Z06: 12.4s
Elise: 14.5s
Skidpad:
Z06: 1.00g
Elise: 0.89g
Top Speed:
Z06: 175mph
Elise: 125mph
Curb Weight:
Z06: 3150
Elise: 1650
Peak Horsepower:
Z06: 405bhp
Elise: 120bhp
Power/Wt Ratio:
Z06: 7.77lbs/hp
Elise: 13.75lbs/hp
Weight Balance:
Z06: 52/48
Elise: 40/60
Braking 60-0
Z06: 105ft
Elise: 135ft (numbers ranged widely from 126-146)
Coefficient of Drag:
Z06: .31
Elise: .36
I pulled each of these figures from at least 2 sources, more in many cases. I think this makes my point for the most part. Obviously hard numbers still won't make up for a better (or crazier) driver on a road course, but it sure appears a Z06 would be superior hardware to start with.

All of those stats are for a base 120hp Elise - FYI. My Exige has 190hp, better tires, better suspension and a real aero package that generates 220lbs of REAL downforce.
QuicksilverC5 - Have you ever sat in an Elise?? Once you are in, it is one of the best driving positions out there.
