There's no junk mail from this company. They have full disclosures about how it works. In a nutshell:
The limited number of free subscriptions boosts the mag over an artificial threshold of subscriber numbers so they get more ad revenue in the next year. Since there are always extras printed, it costs the magazines little to nothing (postage plus minimal processing) to send the copies out.
There is no junk mail because Wired is ~60% ads now. Pretty much the right-hand sides of each layout are full page ads throughout the magazine.
P.S. Maybe I got a different offer but my free (and terrible - I'm always tempted to cancel even though they're free) Stuff and Maxim have been coming for several months.
