That moment marked the Winter Solstice, one of two points (along with the Summer Solstice) on the ecliptic, the great circle of the celestial sphere that is the apparent path of the sun among the stars, or the earth as seen from the sun (the plane of the earth's orbit around the sun extended to meet the celestial sphere), at which the distance from the celestial equator is the greatest and is reached by the sun each year.

As far as sun movement, this is the shortest day of the year, yes. Sadly, the clocks do not move faster, so we are still at work for the same amount of time. Workday clocks should be magnetically and atomically linked to the sun....but not weekend clocks...
