I was just thinking about the route last night. Freeway all the way doesn't sound very interesting to me. I'm thinking Hwy 78 past Julian to Brawley, then down to El Centro. I-8 to Yuma where we have lunch, then on to Gila Bend. From there, Hwy 238 to 347 to I-10 and up into Phoenix from the south.

It would mean an early start for you LA folks, but might take in some landscape you haven't seen before.

That would be fine with me. I don't mind getting up early so I can see some different terrain. Freeway gets a little dull on a long drive. Keep us posted Ron.

I'm looking forward to this cruise.

Ron's right! Freeway driving can get boring after a couple of hours. Plan for some back road.

Any estimate on the extra distance & travel time. From Corona it's almost a hour just to get started.

mapquest listed approximately 361.75 miles (5 hours, 29 minutes) from Garden Grove to Phoenix. Plan for a couple more hours for lunch/pit stop and maybe additional miles for some back roads.
I'm assuming the start time will be around 8-9am or a little later.
