any suggestions for features of helmets? I mean, other than protecting your noggin, air vents, types of visors, etc? I'm a complete newbie at this type of helmet. Also, are there lifetimes for the helmets? I know for cycling helmets, we're always 2 yrs of high usage and they suggest a new one, (UV breaks down the plastic, and/or way to get people to buy new ones), and any accident or drop of the helmet. Is it the same for racing helmets too? Thanks.
Different brand racing helmets have various options for visors and venting. They range from self adjusting visors to pretty iridium coatings and what not. Some helmets come with venting meant for formula cars or have adapters for blowers to blow cool air in. Helmet companies will release newly homolgated helmets once every 5 years(00,05,10, etc...). Usually, track officials will allow you to run up to a 10 year old helmet. The reasoning is that the glues and resins that hold the helmet materials together degrades over time. Its ok if you drop your helmet but as with anything else that you'd entrust to protect your head, try not to do it. SA rated helmets differ from motorcycle helmets as they are rated for fire resistance and multiple impacts(banging your head on the roll cage).

helmet is good for 5 years only ....

after 5 years it gets brittle

I work in the aerospace composites field, and trust me there is no validity to that statement, although UV light can degrade fiberglass over a much longer time if there is no UV protection in the paint.

Edit.....Yeah, what HunterEZ said.....

As far as features, it pretty much depends on what your budget is. But the lighter the better. And personally I prefer a closed faced over an open face.
