Glock barrels and mags are all inter-changeable also. I used to mess around and change mine up all the time I owned a G22,G23 abd G27 all .40 cal and G26 9mm.
Glocks are the safest guns in world when it comes to accidental dis-charge. Their safety action mechanism cannot be fired unless a finger is on the trigger.

Sigs do not have a "safety" the "safety" is your index finger so to speak. Other firearms have a safety with glocks being one of the most well renowned. The hammer/pin will not setoff the round without using the trigger whereas on some other firearms you could drop the gun or be trying to clear a jam and have that happen.
there are sigs that are single action/safety models.

I see people recommending Glocks. For a first gun I wouldn't recommend a glock. And I just don't like the balance or the how stiff the trigger feels.
I think a 12ga or a Revolver is your best bet. A revolver is always ready and has a nice light trigger.
Edit: I didn't want to start a brand war.

One last thing. Be prepared to spend about $500-900 for a good gun.
In San Bernardino there is a shooting range with a gun store. You can rent any gun you like there to help you decide which one feels "natural" in your tiny little hands. After you buy your gun there, you can use it at the range and to help you leave San Bernardino as well.
