If your new to shooting I would stay away from a complicated gun lik Sigs, don't get me wrong I've owned two of them, great guns. Also stick with a more common caliber like 9mm, not a .357 sig, I can see you going in a gun shop now and asking guy behind counter for .357 and he hands you a box of S&W Magnum. I see this all the time when people don't know what exact caliber they have for their guns.

Best start off pistol would be something easy to shoot take apart, and clean. I would suggest a Glock 17 or 19 depending on the size of your hands. My first gun was a Glock 22, full size frame in .40 cal. . No traditional safety to worry about, with Glock's safe action. Easy to take down, and only 3 major parts- frame, slide and barrel to clean once disassembled. Turners always has a great selection of Glocks to choose from.

Normally they run about 8-9 bills, but you can find them on sale for as low as 5-600. They are a heavy, real feeling type gun made of quality materials which is what I like. Some of the other guns like Glock feel kinda light and like toys, you can put the sigs through hell and back and theyll still fire.

Yeah, a lot of people get confused and think their .357sig is a traditional .357mag and endup getting that. Its hard even to get your hands on .357 sig. However, what I like about the p229 is that you can switch it from .357sig to .40caliber in a matter of minutes if you have the other barrel. I dont think the field stripping of the Sig is that much more complicated than the other guns though, especially if you have someone show you what to do, did you find it to be problematic?

^^ You guys need to have a gun 101 for me.

My uncle would usually leave the guns @ the range to be serviced and cleaned.

I would like to know how to clean and service the gun myself.

Even on the sigs, its nothing too complex at all, just a little tedious if you use the gun a lot. Like I said though, my fav part about the p229 .357sig is that you can make it a .40 caliber or vice versa whenever you want so its like having two guns in 1, and it shoots quite a bit different with each one.

.357 would be my first choice for home protection. Excellent stopping power.

My 8mm steel jacketed, steel cored ammo is terrible for home defense. It would go clean through the perpetrator and through my neighbors house without breaking a sweat

Glock barrels and mags are all inter-changeable also. I used to mess around and change mine up all the time I owned a G22,G23 abd G27 all .40 cal and G26 9mm.

Glocks are the safest guns in world when it comes to accidental dis-charge. Their safety action mechanism cannot be fired unless a finger is on the trigger.
