dave, movies are just another way to tell a story. and storytelling is as old as language itself.

the point is that is the story FRESH and entertaining? are the key aspects of the story anything cool or interesting?

ppl are saying NO about avatar.

i kept cracking up inside while watching hurt locker making jokes about cutting the wrong wire like in the old movies (or maybe just lethel weapon)... im SO glad they didnt go there... the hurt locker was just many ways to create the same drama of a "bomb about to blow", but it WORKED. it was a new environment that told a simple story about 3 soldiers.

avatar didnt. get over it.

I like how everyone was fapping about Avatar before and now that the Academy agrees with my original points, everyone gets it.

No one is complaining about Miss Congeniality winning best actress over Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren? Or Tarantino not winning for best original screenplay when it took him nearly twenty years to write Inglorious?

Avatar was a decent movie, with absolutely outstanding art direction, presentation and groundbreaking technology. It was by no means a GREAT story.

Character development-wise, Hurt Locker had easily one of the most interesting stories out of all the movies, albeit a somewhat common theme of war films.

The thing that pissed me off the most is if you're going to nominate ten movies, how did the Hangover not make in there? They nominated District 9 over Star Trek? The academy really needs to get its shit together.

I was pretty stunned that Sandra Bullock won best actress.

having thought about it, i also think ingloroious was a much better screenplay. besides, HL was adapted from a previous magazine article, im not sure that really should count as original screenplay. i dunno tho. i just dont think ppl wanted to see QT blather on stage....

i dunno, i didnt see the blind side. seemed like a kind of one sided after school special type movie, but perhaps she did a good job? enough to garner respect from "the academy"? there definitely seemed like some heavy hitters on the best female nom list.

You're confusing a story synopsis (about 3 sentences) with 5+ years of techno-development, designing, and shooting.

A car analogy is as follows:

"I've seen the Bugatti Veyron before. Hell, they've been making that car for over 80 years. You know, 4 wheels, engine, people sit inside..."
I agree with Dave about Avatar. Though weak on story, it was definitely a game changer for Hollywood.

IMHO, I think he Academy Awards are just a, "pat your self on the back, aren't we great, popularity contest" anyway, so what difference does it make who won?
You can't possibly give awards for something as subjective arts and entertainment.
