Wow...today was tiring, but VERY fun. I went shifter karting for my first time at Willow Springs, on the go-kart track. These little machines are amazing.
Taking a turns in these karts is absolutely crazy. Nothing like I've ever felt before. This is absolutely the closest thing to CART and F1 that you'll ever get too. I LOVE to go fast, but these things were almost scary fast when taking a turn at these high speeds.
Little less than 200 lbs with 125cc motors.
Horsepower ranging from 30-40 horses.
0-60 in high 3s I believe.
g-forces easily over 1.0 and almost up to 2.0 Gs.
6 forward gears.
Here are some pics of today's Karting. p996tt2k and MajorHavoc have some more on their digital camera. I was the official photographer for today
Btw, p99tt2k showed me a couple of his toys, as well as his new go-kart. There were some more toys at the track *ahem* Ferrari Challenge cars *ahem* and other fine sport machines you might enjoy. Thanks Rick for inviting me

Wish I went! Looks like good stuff there Either of you karters able to compare the Willow Springs kart track to the one at Jim Hall kart racing school? Just curious if I am missing out....

The Willow kart track is much much smoother than Jim Hall!
I thought the Jim Hall track needs to be re-surfaced!
The cool thing about KRC at Willow is that it is very low key.
Integrate just went along to watch and they let him drive a 125 shifter kart
in 2 sessions for FREE!!!!!!! How cool is that?
It was almost like a private class with the instructor.
I highly recommend it!

Yup. Willow is much better than Jim Hall. Longer and Wider and Smoother. I haven't raced there yet but in practice it seems like there are many more places to pass at Willow. Jim Hall is too tight to pass anywhere except the braking zone into turn 1.
The Rotax Max Challenge is running at Willow on September 22nd with the KRC shifters FYI....
I might run in RMC but probably not as I am still shaking out my kart. Might just go and watch for kicks though.
What sort of lap times did you guys turn in your shifters?

I think my best time looking at my instruments (still learning the darn thing) is either a 54 or a 51 - this is something like 8 secs a lap slower than the shifters are doing. I think I heard the guy that got 1st last year running a 46 sec lap today.
It was so much fun..... I will post another.

It was a great day today for Integrate and MajorHavoc and I. We had an awesome time in the shifter kart outing. The guys at KRC were very nice and flexible to our wishes. We got there and were in awe of the gorgeous Ferraris they had there. See the previous pics. They also had some Van Diemen race cars as well powered by Honda CBR1100 motors.
We got out on the track and found the 125cc shifter karts every bit meanacing as everyone told us. My new kart has a Dr Jeckal and Mr Hyde personality. You had no power below 9500 rpms, then BAMM!, a violent flood of power all the way to 14,000 rpm. Luckily it has incredible brakes and handling. MajorHavoc and Integrate did incredible in their first time in a shifter. MajorHavoc handled the shifter extremely well considering everyone else was going faster than their skills would allow. MajorHavoc was smooth and composed as much as possible. Integrate was just a natural. His first time out on a kart and did extremely well. Doing lead and follow, I had a hard time passing him even with 30% more power.
I encourage all interested in driving skills and just a fast and Formula 1 type of car experience to try this out. It is incredible!!! This is too good not to do again. I look forward to the next one!!!
