The rsx during it's MMC in 2005 got an upgrade from a 4.4FD to a 4.76FD to mirror the R version sold elsewhere and unanimously everyone found this to be preferable.

The 05 DC5R with a six speed has a 8400 redline and a 146 mph top speed which is comparable to the 4.57FD upgrade in the S

The 4.57 Richmond and ricks gears are noisy as hell though because there not a correct match to the pinion, the 4.4 or 4.7 cryo rem treated will be my next mod since I drive terrain more than anything. probably the 4.7

This is good info. We need to know the car though, was it stock in terms of hp?

For a car with a supercharger or turbocharger I see no point at all in shorter like this and would assume the 1/4 times would actually be worse. I plan to gear taller than stock if anything actually. Though really I'd only do this to get a taller final gear. My real want is a longer 6th gear so I can pull past the 175mph mark and keep my other gears the same as stock. That'd net me less rotations on the engine and I would guess slightly better mpg as well. Not to mention I won't hit the rev limiter before 155mph .

A stock AP1 will be drag limited, whereas a stock AP2 will be gear limited, for top speed.

@ Greg: How about a 3.9 FD?

Bringing this thread back a little to talk about a few things I've seen. Kia/Mazda gears will work fine. The s2k actually uses a Mazda rear end.

Puddydad is the way to go if you absolutely want it done by the best. When I had my s2k I was looking at doing gears and from talking to him he said the MazdaSpeed gears were the best. I don't know if they are available to the public though.

I've got a buddy with an ap1 and 4.77 kia gears though and his diff isn't noisy and he loves them so it's hard to say. I think a lot comes into how well it was built.

Def gear limited for me.

3.9 is what I was considering. Though really I'd just like a taller 6th gear.

Ordered the 4.77 through kia parts this weekend since my cars getting a new oem clutch and act flywheel and I hate down time. But the gears were 280 shipped the install is 325 and about another 100 in oem rebuild parts so 700 ish OTD for the install and I plan on doing some measurements post install hopeful next weekend of 50-70 times since there repeatable and easy to measure.

yes, everything was included, i scheduled an appointment 3 days in advance. Dropped off the car in the morning around 9:00 picked up around 6:00pm. still haven't finish the 1000 miles break in period

it was racing beats 4.44 gear for a RX-7. (on the box it says Genuine Mazda Rx7 parts)

so far i have no gear whine what-so-ever. Everything is perfect.

Don't forget to order the yellow box from modifry.

I think 4.44 is just right and 4.77 is overkill for street. My speedo is off by 7% now until i have time to put in the yellow box.

I want to say that a 4.3 gear is actually faster than a 4.77 gear s2000... imagine racing from 55mph... in car #1, you're in 2nd gear and in car #2, you're in 3rd. Something tells me the 4.3 car would be faster. The 4.77 advantage is all in first gear (which explains the drop in 1/4 mile times). I had 4.77's before and aside from the 5200 rpm freeway cruising nuisance, I always felt like the car was over-geared and actually slower than a stock s2000.

Back to the example; with all else being equal, if both cars are in the same gear at the same speed, then yes, the 4.77FD car will accelerate faster.
