if you're looking to settle down and start a family, definitely orange county (Irvine and surrounding cities) are the place to go. however, you mentioned wanting to live someplace fun - not that the other places aren't, but the action is more towards west la, santa monica, hollywood and environs. i'd definitely rent an apt and get more familiar with the southland before purchasing. socal has many flavors and is very spread out. since you travel a lot, you'll also want to consider proximity to an airport and availability of flights. John Wayne in Orange County and Burbank in the Valley are good alternatives to LAX.
