Default Thinking about flying to buy a car?

Hey all.

Need some input here.

I'm considering flying out like 1500 miles to buy a car in another state. It's a 2005 white s2000 with 30k miles at a reasonable price.

I've been looking for months here in California and haven't seen anything I like or can trust...stupid ass kids...

It has the mileage im looking for.
The vehicle report shows no negatives, no accidents, clean title, single owner who traded it in i think.
It has the interior im looking for.
And most importantly...it's a 2005 gpw s2k.

I won't budge on those things. You think I should fly out to buy the car or wait and be patient for something to show in California.

Keep in mind, I've seen posts of other people searching for the same thing as hard as I am...so i'm sort of competing against them to find that good buy.

Have any of you done this? What was your experience like?

Thanks all...appreciate the help tons!

stupid ass kids?

Anyways. If you found the car, just fly and get it. Nothing beats the fact that you found 100% of what you wanted. I originally wanted a LBP s2k and settled for red, it bugs me now and then but its all good because in the end i still drive a s2k.

yea...like kids who you know totally messed this car up. You ask them stuff like...it has 70k...when was the valve train adjusted? or...when did u replace the rear dif oil?

and their response is...? it's gpw, do you want it?

you're gonna have to smog it and go to dmv to register and get new plates. other than that it was well worth it. fun trip too.

In case things don't work out and the car isn't what you expect it to be, be prepared to fly back.

So here are a couple of things. I have orange county credit union and they won't finance the vehicle unless it has a California Title FIRST. I'm going to call or go in on Monday, but do you think if I went and bought this car with cash (money borrowed from friends and my own) and came back, registered it. Would I be able to take out a personal auto loan against myself so that I could pay my friends back? I'm not sure how all this works, I've never bought a used car even...all my cars have been new.

Also, do I have to pay sales tax/registration in the other state, or only in California? Do I have to pay sales tax in California even though I didn't buy it in California?

How do I ensure it's going to be a good buy? What sort of things should I know before even flying out to look at the car? I'm thinking about calling a local honda dealership and asking them to look at it when I come down.

Lastly, it's at a dealership, does this complicate things or make it easier...or no difference?

THANKS!

drove to arizona 800 miles to get my 04 GPW. well worth the trip and i'm more than happy with my purchase. like you, it was hard for me to find a GPW when the market was very high for the s2k in socal area. got mine at a fair market price and never looked back.

just make sure you get detailed pictures before you fly out there. GL with your search even if this isn't the one.
